Hey, folks -

Puzzler here. My blower cut out yesterday (wouldn't you know it...just when the long-overdue winter weather hits...)

I've checked the 30A breaker fuse at the panel, seems fine. Is there another breaker? Any other suggestions?

Any and all help appreciated!

Seems fine.. did you try a multi meter across it to check for continuity? Might be had to see a little break.

If you can turn it on full, try smacking it a little. Might be the brushes are worn and it quit. Sometimes smacking it will make it start again. Sometimes these motors will find a dead spot and when they are turn off find this spot. I havre had hit and miss electric motors on other stuff. Sometime they start again and go for a bit before they die. It will die though.

But lets hope you problem is power. Also look at the connector to make sure it isn't loose or something.

There's a seriously old-tech resistor set-up that sits inside the actual vent duct, you'll see it if you follow the wiring from the panel to the blower motor. Check to make sure it's not fried.

You can still buy them from Toyota, about $30.

Hey, sounds like my truck...lol Pull the heater motor housing out of the truck. In my 70 its in the passenger floor up by where you're right toe would be. Big round thing about 1/3 the size of a football. Once you've taken out the bolts holding the heater motor, you can pry the motor apart from the casing. Look inside and voila...you'll see a nice pile of dust formerly known as your motor brushes. Order a new one (or get the brushes replaced) and you're good to go. That's at least how it is going for me. Hope its that easy for you. Oh and if its any solace its going down to -38C here and I'm still without my new motor. cheers

if i'm not mistaken, there's a reset on the fan breaker! follow all other suggestion's if nothing happens!
hth,

You can go to an electronics shop and buy some large ceramic resistors to replace the stock ones. They have to be carefully fitted to catch the air stream in the housing to cool properly. They only cost a buck or two each... nice cheap fix.

Also, it's common to need new brushes. If you can find some that are a close fit at a motor shop, you can sand and file them to get them perfect (carefully keep them square) and solder the leads into place with some good quality solder.

I wouldn't say its the resistor, the resistor only gives you the speed variance. When the resistor is gone the blower only works in two positions, full or off. The slower speeds stop working, but full speed still works. I would think that its the motor itself as long as continuity is good.

Cheers

It's the blower motor resistor. In your HJ, it lives near the fuel pedal and is near the shifter. A couple screws to get it out and you should find the resistor broken and i paid 65$ from Toyota for one last year.

I'd be looking for a new motor. The armature is likely already ruined by the hard end of the brush (the imbedded end that holds the lead). At least that is what I found out on my old motor when I took it apart.

Mystery solved

Well, turns out that it was the wee spring that maintains the position of the brush. Corroded or snapped in the cold. Brush itself is worn, but servicible. A plug to salvage the spring and I'm back on the road...Thanks, all!
