Does anyone have experience with a block heater on a LJ78 (2L-TE)?

I put one in the lower rad hose because it came with the vehicle, but even though the heater gets hot it does not seem to transfer the heat to the block.

Maybe the T-stat prevents it. The heater info that came with it said it would not work on some models of mercedes, but did not mention toyota.

How about the type that fits in a heater hose?

We had -28C here last week and it was tough to get it to go.

A block heater for a NA model with the 2LT 4 cyl diesel is avail from NAPA and will fit right in. You'll have to pull the starter. Be sure to bleed off your coolant system afterwards.

in your lower rad hose where you installed the heater, it needs to be pointing up towards the block/waterpump. If the heated coolant wants to rise that is where it needs to go. If you place the heater with the rise to the rad it will warm the rad.

the other thing to consider is a circulation heater, it installs in some arbitrary part of the coolant system (say the path to the rear heater) and contains a small sealed low volume circulation pump as well as a 450, 750, 1200W heater. When running it evenly heats the block and all associated sub systems, so when you jump in you have hot air right away...

I put it near the top of the hose so any movement would have to go up to the block. The heater gets very hot to the touch but doesn't seem to get any heat into the block.
