I work part time as a military security consultant. Not former military. The flag on the US Marines facility is at full mast but they were flying a black flag next to it. What does the black flag mean?

i think its a distress call for the black stallion or night rider or something of that sorts....flying black flags is only cool in the daylight. maybe pirates?

just a solid black flag. No logos or insignia....was wondering if it was for the extreme heat.

Black Flag refers to the heat stress rating for the time being. It's also referred to as W.B.G.T (Wet Bulb Globe Temperature) rating. When it's black flag conditions, it's the worst rating and usually troops are not forced to run, extra precautions are used to insure everyone gets plenty of water and outdoor exercises are restricted. The W.B.G.T. rating is continuously monitored at every post I've ever been on. The hotter and more humid it is, the worse the rating will be.

You normally see this only on training facilities or training bases. In the fleet Marine Corps, we would laugh at them and then go on a conditioning run or hike.

SCJ is correct. Back in the early '80's I was assigned to various posts around the FMC and training posts. The ramifications of the wet bulb reading--and consequent flag condition--were paid far more attention in training scenarios. It's generally followed religiously at MCDEC Quantico. In my time at TBS and when I was on staff at OCS, it was monitored and followed strictly.

This is far from a training facility, its a readyness facility with most of the marines having 20 or plus years on. Marines rarely come outside and longshoremen do all labor.

Sounds like some pretty smart senior NCO's, etc. Why go out when it's that hot anyway?
