I have a new to me BJ74 and noticed slight vibration and grinding sound that was throttle and load sensative. I checked the rear output shaft and it has up and down play as well as in and out play on the output yoke....The nut is tight and staked...I can assume that the output bearing is shot(fluid is brown looking maybe brass bushings wasted?). I would like to fix it ASAP. First question is can or has anyone done a rebuild in a bj74 or do I have to drop the trans also? I saw in the 60 section they say it can be done in the truck but I want to know for sure if it can be cone in a BJ74. Second where is the best place to get a Kit from.Spector has one for 209$. Any and all input would be greatly appreciated..

Thanks for the fast reply..I have the Service manual with the step by step. I am curious if it can be done without removing from the truck and anyone have any recommendations on a good kit with good quality bearings.

Quite a few mudders have done the t/case in situ. For the kit ,try Cdan or someone from the list of vendors in the index.
If your in North America you can get one from a dealer for a FJ62 which will fit all t/case with the 38mm idler

Lots of room to rebuild on the truck, make sure you don't remove the 2 or 3 bolts that hold the front half of the case, otherwise you have to reseal the 5th gear spacer.

I have it all torn down and am awaiting the kit to put it back together...The rear output bearings were loose and pitted...the idler shaft has a rough spot worn in it and the needle bearings were pitted... Thanks for all your help. Jason

It is not hard to rebuild the split case. Most of them can be done in the truck, but be careful of the gaskets between the tcase and the trans.

Kits vary in price, but look for really high quality bearings and a complete kit that has the idler shaft and small parts. You will probably need to get some shims to set the out put bearing pre-load since none of the kits I have seen come with these.

I will be re-assembling in the morning.. Hopefully I will have it back on the road tomorrow.. Thanks for everyones input..
