Hi all,

87 JDM BJ74. A recent clunk has presented itself when I'm turning the truck left and right whether it be to get out of a parking spot or to pull into the driveway. Definitely coming from the front lower end by the tires, cv's maybe? Anyone have a good supplier?

Also, my front suspension only has .5 inches of travel until it hits the bumpstops, could something be getting in the way with the lack of clearance. For the record, I have an OME lift going on in March.

The truck also hasnt been greased or lubed since I bought it two months ago, would this cause the clunk?

Thanks fella's,

Tanner

I have always had clunking when it's been wet and raining outside, wether running stock, OME, or beltons. It's not always predictable but happens occaisionally.

I echo the worn bush or loose ubolt comment. If it is rythmic, your not rubbing your tire lugs against the rubber aprons inside the fenders?

Birfs make more of a clicking noise - not clunking

I have clunking all the time and it seems to be getting worse (when turning, especially when the suspension is in motion while turning), does it have anything to do with axle seals and wheel bearings? I'm nervous that might axles may be in need of an over haul, I just don't have time. What are the signs that your axles need maintenance? would tie rod ends also make clunking sounds?

I'd start by tightening your rod ends. Then going over the ubolts ( re torque). and then try using a pry bar to see if you have bush movement.

Wheel bearings don't usually clunk and if they were failing you'd hear grinding while driving slow or howling on the highway.

If everything checks out ( no movement after tightening and bushes look fine, then you may have a birf problem.

Cheers,

john

I had that problem which was excessive play in the front OME poly bushings.

THnaks John!!
i'll try that tomorrow.

I have rubber stock bushings

cheers

Max

Thanks guys. I'll try all those ideas on saturday. By the way, is a 'birf' another word for CV?
