Hi, I have the opportunity to buy a 87 BJ-70 with 290,000 km

It is an original Canadian vehicle, 5 spd, 3B, no AC. Unmodified.

Exterior is good-very good, the odd ding and scrathc, no rust visible

Interior is excellent.

What is a fair price to offer, its been sitting for a couple years since he bought a 4-door .

I'm thinking between 4 and 6k?

thanks in advance

I would say, depending on how much rust, its probably worth almost twice that or more. Its really only half way through its life, and if it has no, or little rust, all the better. Of course, that is a biased opinion cause I want another one bad.

Where is the truck ? USA, Canada ? The region can also play a role on the price.

Like knorrena, I would say between 10 to 16K$. There a great BJ70 for sell here in the Montréal area : 15K and it is a good price. (Toyota Landcruiser BJ 70 LX Diesel 4x4 - LesPAC.com)

So, do not expect to pay a low price on that kind of truck.... especially if the seller knows what he has in the hands... especially if there is very little rusty

thanks, its in the vancouver area. the truck has been sitting, but has been garaged most of its life otherwise, and never ofroad other than being a winter/ski vehicle.

It's not activley for sale, I bought an acreage and the neighbor has it. He told me he'd be happy to sell it to me, and to "come up with a fair price". (he doens't need the money). I want to give him a fair price though.

he says he starts it up once in a while and it fires off first turn of the key.

No accesories (racks/bumpers etc), original clutch and everything else. a small oil leak under the engine.

So you guys are thinking north of 8k?

You can always try your luck with a small price. You might be surprised about the answer. Anyway... it yes or no !

It the way I bought my BJ42.

I would suggest you go with your first idea by offering 4K .... who knows? Maybe it will de happry with that offer without you spending too much $ $ $

Good luck

Really depends on the body and frame. Price of a 70 is directly related to the amount of rust. if the rear quarters ,rockers and frame are solid, then yeah, that's a fair price, and it could even be higher.

Even ones that are rusted to hell can go for 3 k or more.

sneak over there with a camera and take a couple shots of the quarters and underneath....

Anything under $6K would be a great price. I just purchased a 88' JDM BJ70 in the Vancouver area for $6K with no rust but needed about $1-2K put into it. A Cdn model in simular condition would have been worth another $1K to me.

if the frame is solid
if the engine runs good
if the clutch and tranny is good

then don't insult him, offer him a fair price. i would say MININUM is $6K

if you came to me and offered $4k i would escort you off the property and if you did come back with a fair offer i would still tell yah to walk.

insulting a fellow cruiserhead brings bad karma and upsets the Cruiser Gods

of course he might get the idea it is worth some good coin and advertise it.

here is the way i used to buy cruisers.
"be friendly"
i saw your 70 out back and was wondering if you ever thought of selling it?
i have been looking for a nice restorable rig for a while and would liek to know how much it is worth to yah...
chat about cruiser lore, the brotherhood and runs you have been on... if you come across as a knowledgable cruiserhead and friendly who knows how much you will pay.
i have scored some great buys in the past doing it this way.

i tried the low ball scam in the distant past and when one old fart told me to F off in no uncertain terms on a vehicle i really wanted i decided that wasn't the way to treat a fellow cruiserhead...

up to you of course, it is your money, your time and your gut instinct...

I like what Wayne has to say, but I am a firm believer in market value, why dont you ask him what he thinks is fair, I was recently looking at another cruiser heads 40 and what he thinks is fair and what i think is fair are on polar opposite ends of the earth, that being said 70's are more uncommon ( not rare ) , and there is a 45 for sale in vancouver right now for less than $6000 , now thats a very uncommon truck , i would say it should be worth more than a 70, but that is only my opinion. The jdms have dropped the price on domestics , but I would still rather drive a lhd .

note, i am not saying you have to pay his asking price... but it wil give you an idea of what he feels it is worth...

i remember looking at an old 45 about 10 years back, there wasn't a decent part on it and the owner felt it was worth $5K... it wasn't worth 500 bucks... so i nicely said, "best of luck" and walked away... he still had it last time i drove by...a lot more rusted and stil sitting in the same spot... i wouldn't be surpriesed if it had a tree growing through it...

there is another 40 i looked at, the owner had no intention of selling but i spent a nice afternoon chatting cruisers with him... great stories and a nice old fart...

cruiser life is more than just owning a cruiser, it is the time you spend with the brothers... this is what sets us apart from the Roverheads...

Pay particular attention to where the door hinges bolt up to the body, the a pillars, and around the windshield. Most other places can be fixed easily enough, but the areas I mentioned are harder because of how the metal is shaped. Also look at the the fuel tank slider. While in and of itself, its not important, it is a good indicator of the general condition of the truck.
