Hi all.

I'm new here and looking for some advice on converting a BJ70.

Engine:2H
What i would like to know is, would a 2H engine fit in the BJ70 engine bay and is there any modifications i need to carry out, to get the 2H engine to fit.

Gear box:2H or 3B
Do i use the 2H gear box or 3B gear box

Prop Shafts:

Would i need to lengthen or shorten the prop shafts, change the flanges on the 2H box or the 3B prop shafts  ( a little on on this subject plz)

I've used the search button but cant find any thing.
I've done a similar conversion with a Vauxhall frontera 2.3td and put the 3.1 Isuzu Trooper engine in and had to modify the prop shaft by lengthening them and changed the flange on the prop shat that is connects to the gearbox to make it all work.

I have 3 2H engines, one with a gear box and 2 60 series axles. weather the axles will be of any use, i dont know but i have them.

Why would you want to do this? Is it for power? Put a turbo on it if that's the reason.

I have not heard of anyone doing it, but others may know someone. Wayne?

well, there's lots of 70's out there with 6 cyl. engines from the factory , so physically, it'll fit.

you'll need to use the 2h gearbox ( different input shafts)

and you could probably get it to fit without modifying the driveshafts.

Lots of little things to mess with i'm sure. but should be doable.

A number of reasons really.

Its ethere a landrover 90 or a Landcruiser BJ70. ;)

I need a SWB 4x4 for what i intend to do with it, off roading, hunting, camping and towing and i think by putting the 2H engine in would transform the BJ70 into a good all rounder.

And if it hasn't been done before then all the more reason to do it .

I have a LWB 4x4 at the moment and I'm not really happy with it off road.

I hope this answers your question :)

I don't think the question is why a BJ70, rather, why a 2H in a BJ70? The 2H isn't a big power increase over the 3B, and a turbo 3B will outperform a 2H easily and be MUCH less work than a swap.

If you're swapping in a 6, why not something with a bit of poop, like a 12H-T, 1HZ+turbo, or a 1HD-T? A 3B for a 2H seems like a lot of work for not near enough payoff.

I'm familiar with the 2H and don't know much about the other engines. I don't know if they use an ECU for the fueling etc and would prefer to stay away from having to Hard wire an engine control unit (ECU).

I just want to keep things simple. As for the 3B, are you suggesting to replace the 3B with a 13B-T ???

A 13BT could be a possibility, depending on your wallet/budget.

The easiest/cheapest way to increase power for a 3B is to put on a turbo. There are some kits specifically setup for this - AXT Turbo Systems Available. Or, you can build your own. Do a search, and you will find lots of info on these two options. But no, it would be a 3B w/ Turbo, not a 13BT.

A fellow Austin LSLC member has a intercooled and turbocharged 85 BJ70 (spallet). I've driven it and it's amazing fast and does well as highway speeds.

Thanks for the link arcteryx. :)

I'v just visited the site, they do a turbo kit for the 2H.

Looking at the figures from what AXT Turbo shows, it would make sense to turbo the 2H as i'd be gaining more from the 2H than the 3B with a turbo.

Now i'm thinking of staying with the original idea, Fit the 2H but with a Turbo.

Can any one help.

IMO, the 2H is NOT a good candidate for a turbo, as it does not have piston skirt cooling. People have done it though. The 3B does have piston skirt cooling BTW.

Here is another link that may help- CIS Auto Web's Diesel Land Cruisers Andre is recognized as one of the leaders in diesel cruiser knowledge. Enjoy the site!

Jerry.

Yes it was done in the thousands by Toyota with the HJ75 cab cab chassis and troopy which are longer but have the same engine bay as the BJ70

You will need the 2H gearbox or swap the 2H/3F input shaft into your 5 sp.

There was a guy from oz who had put the 2H into his 73 series with pics .His name was Wayne BJ73.
He was happy with it but sold it due to family needs.
Alas ,his pics have been removed

A lot of owners have turboed the 2H and if its not driven hard ,it seems to hold up.
See Tapages 2H 60 series and BigBrowndogs 75 seriers,both have 2H turboed.

IMO you are better off with a 1HZ which is a little more cost but will give the same power you want without a turbo.
My 73 series with a 1HZ can cruise at 120 kph all day and keep up with traffic without over stressing the engine.
Hills rarely require a gear change:D
