BJ42 cruiserporn - Edit: 13 June No longer stolen - It's been recovered!

Hi folks.

I'm reluctant to start yet a 3rd thread dealing with the same stolen vehicle ... but both the other 2 threads are on the 40-series board and the vehicle involved is indeed a diesel.

Anyway ... this thread then has 2 purposes...

  • Firstly to alert the diesel-enthusiasts to the "stolen threads" so they can give Bart support/sympathy (possibly even provide help if you're NZ-based), and
  • Secondly ....just to view/discuss his vehicle (of which he only has the keys left)
Here are the main photos of this nice BJ42

Due to the very short period that Bart has owned it (2 weeks till theft) ... all the photos come from the PO.

BTW...the main "stolen thread" on the 40-series board is this one:

And the secondary one is this one:

Now we have the internal shots which have Bart and myself a little confused:

05032010424.jpg

05032010426.jpg

The PO apparently told Bart that this was a 1984 BJ40.

But those of us in this diesel section know that a BJ40 has a 3 litre B-engine whereas a BJ42 has a 3.4 litre 3B engine.

This has a 3.4 litre 3B engine so I've been labelling it as a "BJ42".

But notice the glow controller on the dash!

A 1984 BJ42 should be "superglow" and without a "glow controller" shouldn't it?

And I think I see a glow controller there although Bart says he never saw it actually glow?

Comments appreciated.

:beer::beer:

Oh....Another titbit of information.

Another thing that has drawn me to Bart is that I actually spotted his vehicle in the city a few days prior to the theft .... and watched in admiration as he and his mates cruised past.

By "glow controller" do you mean the lamp just below the oil and fuel guages? if so, then I can tell you that my 1984 bj45 is just the same and it also has the 3.431L 3B ...

Thanks Flatdeck

Yes. I'm referring to the thing arrowed here:

GlowController.jpg

Well I'm really displaying my ignorance now, but I thought a 1984 had to be "superglow".

Furthermore I thought "superglow" used a simple light/lamp instead of a "glowcontroller" (the thing arrowed in the photo) and that the whole glow-operation was automatic rather than being "manually controlled".

So I'm wrong in all of this obviously?
GlowController.jpg

The "glow controller" (arrowed in your photo) is controlled by the ignition key i.e. to glow turn ignition key back till glow controller glows - usually about a count to 20-25 for mine) then fire her up. So, no not automatic.

Learn something new every day! .....Thanks.

Exactly the same as my older BJ40!

(Gotta shoot off to work now.)

I hope the vehicle is found and the thieving scum cop serious punishment. As for the glow system, I'm not sure in NZ spec vehicles, but all vehicles from late '82 on have superglow here in Australia, I have a 1/83 BJ 42 and 8/84 HJ 47 and both are superglow - work fine too.:)

The center dash and steering wheel is a later model 4* but there is a absence of the dash pad which is odd for a 42, it is odd that it has a glow controller normally it would be on the right side of the steering wheel on a RHD... if the plugs are worn out the controller will not glow no matter how long you hold the key in the revese position.
I guess you guys did not get the superglow system which is what should be in that year 4*

Well up until now I thought Aussi and kiwi specs were the same.

Hohepa contradicts this!

Here are some research results I've done just a minute ago:

  • The chassis number BJ4200#### shows it's definitely a BJ42
  • It was first registered in New Zealand on 2 November 1984 so Hohepa was sold "new" in NZ (rather than being a used-import)
  • It's current licence expires 7 Aug 2010
  • It's last Road User Charges sticker was purchased 2 April 2008 and is still valid
  • Its present Warrent of Fitness expires on 11 July 2010 with the last inspection having occured on 11 January 2010 with 231679kms (on the speedo)
  • It has a 3B engine - 3B0######
  • It changed owners 30 March 1987, 2 April 1987, 3 May 1990, 4 June 1990
Hey ... Why isn't the latest change of ownership to Bart recorded? I'll have to ask him this!!!!

So your 1984 BJ45 is "manual glow" ...

Now that's interesting.

....But all vehicles from late '82 on have superglow here in Australia.........

And I certainly thought the same stuation applied here (in the BJ4# series at least)

Well your understanding of what you'd expect to see in a 1984 RHD BJ42 is exactly the same as mine Dieseler ... here in New Zealand too

Which is why the dash picture has me so confused.

So Flatdeck .... Can you tell us if your glow controller is in the same position as Hohepa's or is it on the far right?

Also, we never got the BJ 45 here in Australia, all of our long wheelbase 45/47 diesels have either the 3.6 litre H motor or 4 litre 2H.

Yes. I'm surprised I've never seen more threads dedicated to the BJ45 model. They seem to be quite rare on the world scene.

It's always struck me as an "oddball" (and I don't mean that in a derogatory way because I'm infatuated with all forty-series).

I can see I'll have to do a few searches to find out more about them.

Edit: Wikipedia says the HJ45 production ceased in 1980 and BJ45 production started at that point and continued till 1984 (when all forty series production ceased).

I'll keep an eye out down here. There aren't many 40's on the road any more and not in that colour either.

Thanks Dougal.

I've had no bites really in my separate thread about the colour.

Bart tells me it is "Azure blue" and that this is even written on the firewall. But that seems odd to me (if it were a FACTORY colour)because my experience is that the colour is normally printed only as a "number code".

And despite what he says about it being Azure Blue, he's been calling it "baby blue" and "powder blue"..... because those names tend to automatically conjure up images of the correct colour in most people.

But from my point of view I can't help thinking that colour was common on 40-series cruisers like "BJ45 farm trucks" a few years ago.

PS.
Your right ..... 40 series aren't common anywhere now. Not even on 90 mile beach where they used to be everywhere!

Right so the great news is that this cruiser ("Hohepa") has been recovered. And the owner (Bart) is very lucky too because the only damage appears to be breakin-damage plus the removal of the licence plate from the front.

Further details about its theft/recovery are unavailable (and will probably remain that way till after court proceedings have been completed).

But I'll add photos I took (when Hohepa was at my place) here because this thread is in the "diesel section" where there I think there'll be the most interest.

I've discovered the colour is extremely similar to an old cruiser colour called "Capri Blue - 310" but I don't know whether or not Toyota resurrected that colour in 1984. (I forgot to check the VIN plate when I had the chance so we now need Bart to tell us what colour is listed on it - if any.)

As far as the glow system is concerned, I think it has probably been tampered with and that the glow controller is bypassed.

I took this photo to try and find out the plug voltage rating but all it reveals is that they are Bosch plugs:

Glowplugs1.jpg

Look at those white plastic caps! They've been long-lost on most similar cruisers!

My suspicion is that it has 10.5V plugs fitted (which would be the way to go if one was to bypass the controller). This next photo proves it is certainly not "superglow" and to me the wiring to the busbar looks like it may have been replaced (supporting the theory that the glow wiring has been modified).

Glowplugs2.jpg

The only sensible reason (IMO) for bypassing the glowcontroller would be if it is damaged/burnt-out.

If the glow controller was connected up .... of course it should be running 8.5V plugs.

(BTW Bart - If you're reading this ... The voltage rating of those plugs will be stamped on the top of them there. I was unlucky that my photo never captured it!)

Aren't modern cameras great! You can capture details with them that the human eye can't see! (I've already enlarged part of that first picture to read the lettering. But alas the plug is facing the wrong way .... I can merely read part of the part number which is inconclusive.)

I'm getting fed up after having spent too much time on the computer....so I'll just add another couple more photos for today.

I'm keen to get opinions from people who have cruisers with OEM "sound-deadening" fitted under the hood.

Is it really heavy stuff? (Or perhaps Bart's lining here had soaked up about 20 litres of water! It did indeed appear damp.)

I ask because I swear Hohepa's hood weighs around THREE times the weight of mine. (It felt just sooooo heavy when I lifted it.)

Here's the lining with an imprint (from the aircleaner) in it:

HoodSoundDeadening1.jpg

And here is the air cleaner that looks like it's been patched with bog!

HoodSoundDeadening2.jpg

So that's another thing that's strange. I'm sure my BJ40 has good clearance between the aircleaner and hood! Thoughts?

(The aircleaner mess and clearance problem are both easy-enough to repair of course.)
HoodSoundDeadening1.jpg
HoodSoundDeadening2.jpg

Take a picture of the whole under the hood. But from the small section i see this doesn't seem OEM. There should be many plastic clip preventing it to drop on any motor part.

Unfortunately I'm stuck with just the photos I took 3 days ago and I don't have any showing more of the underside of the hood Eric.

And I'm not sure if that muck on the aircleaner is bog/filler or some of the hood insulation that has somehow liquified and then set there. How close does the aircleaner normally come to the underside of the hood on a BJ42?

I was going to work outside but the rain has begun again and it's freezing cold out there .... so back to the computer it is.

Another question:

Look at the "step-down resistor" controlling the blower speed on Bart's cruiser! Is that OEM:

Blower.jpg

It looks quite a bit different to mine:

Blower1.jpg

And look at this.....

A 1984 BJ42 got a "hood catch" operated from within the cab!

HoodCatch1.jpg

And to demonstrate what is exceptional about "Hohepa" .....

Look! Exhaust manifold heat shield still in place:

ExhaustHeatshield.jpg

And look at the state of the rear! (Absence of dents/rust.):

Tub.jpg

And look at good state of the headlining:
