Hi all, first time post, so bear with me...it's an easy one : )

I have a 79 BJ40, just munched the B engine, and have a 3B and 5 speed from a 85 Bj70...Can anyone provide details of what I have to do, fabricate, purchase etc, to make this swap? I'm pulling all the 24v gear off the B, and converting the 3b to that...any help would be greatly appreciated...

Once I'm done, ..I have a 79 B motor with head damage and a 4 speed taking up space : )

Mike

Hey mike, where are you at. I might be interested in that b block. What exactly are you planning on keeping on her(Drivetrain??)
Lemme know.

Hi All:

I would imagine that a search of the archieves might tell you whether the "B" and "3B" share the same motor mounts and positioning in the engine bay.

Switching from the H42 four speed to the H55F five speed will require some modifications, likely the transmission mounts and possibly a frame crossmember as well.

Try to find a 1983 or 84 BJ42 to "eyeball" for reference; this is what you are attempting to replicate.

Good luck on the drivetrain swap!

Alan

Thanks for the advice...the engine I'm ok, The transmission, once I have it out of the donor, I'm sure it will be obvious, but any heads up from previous experiences will be gladly accepted : )I have tried to contact members here with 42's to get pics...and as far as archives, I'm trying....

The main issues that I can think of are the tranny shift tower. I know the H55 for the BJ60 and the H55 for the BJ42 do NOT use the same shift tower. I'm not sure what shift tower is on the BJ70. The differences are the BJ60 shift tower positions the shifter further to the rear and the BJ42 positions it further to the front.
Drive shaft lengths will change and you'll need to allow for that.
Depending on if you have a lift you may encounter rub at the front driveshaft as it passes over the tranny mount.
Since the BJ40 is a '79 you may have e-brake issues too if you have the driveline e-brake. I'm not sure if the BJ40's here ever had a driveline e-brake.

Engine mounts are the same, no problem there.

Yep, bj40's had the driveshaft ebrake...

I actually did pretty much the same thing a few years ago, to my 79 bj40...

Difference was I changed the frame at the same time ( old one was pooched)

but yep, everything changed over from the engines, no problems there whatsoever.

the tranny crossmember may be an issue for you, I used the 60 series one as it has the "dip" in it for the front driveshaft, but I think I had to bastardize it a wee bit. ( basically shorten the ends)

you 'may' need the double cardan driveshaft on the front as well, depending on the crossmemberas the 5 speed is a bit longer, the front tcase output is further back, so sometimes a regular driveshaft can hit the crossmember. if you have no lift then this likely won't be a problem...

the frame crossmember behind the tcase may need some clearancing...and lastly, the gearshift tower will come out in a different spot, but that's no biggee, cut another hole and block off the old one, and you'll probably want to bend a new kink in the shifter, as it tends to hit the seats when in 2nd and 4th...

EDIT, just noticed you said bj70 , so, I'm not sure what the deal will be with the tranny crossmember, it's probably different again, but it's just a hunk of metal... the shift tower on the 70 is the same as a 60, but the shifter is different so you probably won't have to bend it...

cheers,
ryan

Sorry should have mentioned it, the BJ40 has at least 3 inches of lift...I have the driveline e-brake and found a kit re-fit the ass'y onto the h55j...I'll have a look at the 70's crossmember, and go from there, thanks again for your help...
