I haven't seen side jump seats in a 70. Are they only with ragtops?

I learned a lot this day. Thanks for keeping the discussion going. What I'm getting from these discussions is that $11,900 is too much to pay for a Canadian BJ70 with 350,xxx km. I am hoping that ths stays in the used car lot for somtime... and wait until the dealer reduce the price to $10K. This is the best BJ70 that I've seen, so far. Last month I drove all the way to Sundre to look at a Cruiser advertised in the Autotrader.ca for $9,700. The seller said it's 99% rust free. Not quite. I was dissapointed because it has lots of rust. I'll be patient. There's that Cruiser just for me. Anyways, I think I got my 10-year old daughter on my side. She's now a Cruiser fan. She made a word document with pictures of Landcruisers describing its superiority vs. Hummers and Jeeps. I wish I could send the word document to you guys. She's cool. Thanks a lot for all your help.

Yeah man, smart decision to wait. You are starting to see the 70 series all the time in Calgary, and one will come along for the right price with low km and in great condition. I personally would seriously have a hard time spending 12 grand on a truck from 1986 with over 300,000km on it. It might be well maintained ( who knows? ), but if you were to turn around and sell it the next day you would be lucky to get 10 for it. That truck will sit and his price will go down. These cruisers are of amazing quality, we all know that. And we just gotta have one. But they are a good investment for 3 reasons: 1- they are rare ( for now ) 2- good condition ( no rust ) 3- low mileage ( high re-sale value ). You will find one soon with all 3 for the right price...

I suspect that you are not too familiar with the 70 series or the 3b. 300000 is nothing for these trucks. Mine had over 510000 and no problems aside from a bad glow plug timer. My 42 had 285000 on it when I sold it. I called the guy back to buy it back from him and he had over 5020000 on it and would not sell because it runs great. Suppose that at 300000 it had only another 100000 left in it. have a look around and see what 10000 can get. It wont get you a 4x4 truck that gets 20+ mpg that requires only minor maintenance to keep running, or a truck that wont bust an axle, tranny, tcase, and so on if treated with respect.

Litespeed,

I wish that I could afford the time to look at the truck for you. I might be able to squeeze in a viewing tonight, but most likely not. You could pm me your number and we could chat. Sometimes chatting on the phone is better than chatting online. On Wed. I leave for Edmonton to complete my Ph. D., and I wont be back until Wed. of next week. You should rethink your notion of value. If you dont think 10000 is too much its not. If you really want the truck get it, but I caution you to not keep looking at other trucks to see what a deal you got. Buy it and be happy. Consider the trucks that Wayne sells. They are indeed nice trucks, but they come at an extreme premium. Have a look at his site. However, he sells them. Some folks would not pay the asking price, but some folks will because they have thier own sense of value.

My thought is if you buy it you will be happy. If you doddle and wait and ponder and it gets sold, you may never find another. Recall that there were about 600 of these ever shipped to Canada. You really should also check with your wife too. I aint claiming to be Dr. Phil here, but it just seems common sense to talk it out with someone you trust enough to want to marry.

Edit: If the truck you are looking at is the one in the Autotrader, be cautious. These guys are nice, but kinda shady. I looked at the hdj81 they have had on thier lot for almost a year, and asked a few questions about thier mechanical inspection and they provided no satisfactory answers. No satisfactory answers were provided about thier warranty either. The truck is still the truck, in that it is still reliable in its own right, but I would not buy it thinking that it has had a mechanical inspection, or a warranty.

All valid points, but I sure am glad I got mine with 112,000k for that price... I guess in 8 years mine should theoretically be worth the same...

If you have the money and you like the truck, buy it... I agree, YOU will probably love it.

Korrena, are you talking about the lot on Ogden Road? I agree, they are nice and always have JDMs on the lot but can never answer any questions about them... weird. As if they don't know anything about the units. Its as though they withhold information...

Sounds like you got a kickass deal on yours Natty. Yup, Ogden Road, they are the ones I am refferring to. A well known issue with the HDT motor is the big end bearings. Some think its related to the oil available outside of Japan. I dont know myself exactly why, but this seems a plausable reason. When I asked if they had changed out the BEB, they had no idea what I was talking about. So I got to thinking that if the the bearing siezes and I, or anyone else pursues them, what would they do? So I asked about the warranty and who they get the work done by. He said they do the warranty work here in the shop. I think he forgot that he told me they dont have a mechanic and that they sent the truck out for an initial mechanical inspection. None of this matters cause I do most of my own work anyway, but it speaks volumes about the integrity of the shop.

Good point. That is just an uninformed risky purchase, especially for a truck over 10k. I think regardless of price and model, the best thing one could do when buying one of these is to take it to someone such as yourself or Wayne to have a look at. Thats what makes this site so awesome, everyone seems to look out for one another in that respect. As for my truck, its an 87 BJ73, so no turbo, no air, just bare bones. I probably paid a little too much, but like litespeed I had the itch and the money was burning a hole in my pocket. The first thing I did was take it to Wayne. I lucked out and it is in excellent shape, bodywise and mechanically. A 70 series has always been my "dream truck". And yes, they are definately not cheap. But buyers have to be aware just how much people are making off these units, especially to guys like us who have the itch. Like you said, if you have the cash, try to buy from someone who knows the goods, such as Luxury... or have it looked over before the purchase...

Just curious, why not just buy one of Wayne's trucks?

i 2nd that idea at least you or we know that you are going to get service and not
a peice of ....
