I have been reading a lot of posts in this forum , but have not really posted much. I have been planning for some time to buy my first Landcruiser. I found a decent shape BJ70 in a used car dealership. 1986, 24V, 350,xxx km, winch, little lift, wider tires, most important of all - no rust. I took it for a test drive and the only weird thing that I felt was the clutch/transmission. It was hard to shift, specially gearing down. Is this just a clutch problem or a bigger transmission problem? Any idea on how much to fix the clutch? Asking price $11,900 Cdn. I tried to bargain to $10,000, but the dealer would not give it. Here are my other questions:
1. Is this a fair price to pay? I'm surprised that a used car dealer would not even move on his asking price.
2. Anyone in Calgary knows the history of this BJ70? I was surprised to find a near mint BJ70 in a used car dealership. I asked where they got it. They said someone came by and just sold it to them. The used car salesman does not have a clue on what he's selling. I casually asked him how come there are two batteries? His answer floored me. He said the other one was a spare battery. If the previous owner was an LC enthusiast, I wondering why the he sold it to the dealership instead of selling on his own. He could have gotten more. Now I have to pay GST if I decide buy it.

I have a case of Landcruiser envy. So if anyone on the board can help me decide with my mind rather than my heart, it will be much appreciated. Thanks.

Man, you should be able to get a 70 with 100,000 km or lower for that price easy. That is crazy high mileage for a JDM Cruiser. Trust me, that truck will be sitting there for a long, long time. And about the shifting, my BJ73 tends to be a little hard to shift at lower gears, especially when cold. And downshifting, I almost have to be stopped to put it in 1st, but downshifting to 3rd & 2nd is no problem. I think this tends to be typical ( someone correct me if I'm wrong ) of the 70 series 5 speeds. Are you at that lot on Ogden road? Man, if you want a truck now and are willing to spend that type of money on a Cruiser with 300,000km, at least go to Canyon Creek Toyota where they know about what they sell. Or the best thing you can do is contact Wayne at Luxury Imports and see if he can point you in the right direction. If you want a 70 series in Calgary, he is the guy. He can be trusted and you will feel informed and good about your purchase. The truck you are looking at right now is BEAT.

thanks Natty,
what you can do is bring the truck by and i can take a look at it. it sounds fairly high milage and the tranny will either need the $12 fix or a rebuild.
i have no problems looking at it, most dealers have heard of me, some will refuse to let a possible customer bring it to me...(wonder why?)

the other option is to have me find you a cruiser that will fit your budget and needs...

cheers and welcome to the addiction.

Thanks for the quick reply, Wayne and Natty. You're right, I'm addicted. I even brought my 10-year old daughter to look at this truck. I guess I would like to get her at my side to be able to sell the idea to my wife.

One thing I forgot to mention, this BJ 70 looked like a CDM. It is left hand drive. Wayne, I'll visit the dealer again after Easter and if the truck is stilll there , I'll give you a call. Thanks again for all the guidance.

Just a suggestion, you are obviously a family man and will probably find a need for more room than that 70. You should look into a 73 or 74 'cause they can be had for around that price range and are much more of a truck than the 70 ( heavy duty suspension, more room, removable top, better re-sale value, etc... ). Although if you like that 70 stubby look, then there you go. Any way you look at it, you can't find a better quality vehicle with such low mileage as a JDM Toyota.
Good luck with the wife... they usually tend to lean towards minivans... ;)

Plus the 70s have the head cracking issues, do they not?

natty,
there are HD 70 and LD 70...
the CDM was only HD 70 series. the LD(light duty-LJ) have the problems with heads.
the rear seat in a CDM 70 has more leg room thant the JDM 73/74 series. for leg room go with the 77 series. or go side mount seats in the 70 /73-74 series and have the best of all worlds...

BTW, i know a guy that has a nice 77 for sale for a very reasonable price...

Interesting point about the legroom. About the side mount seats, do you remove the bench seat and fit side seats from a 40? I noticed the pic of one of your trucks with those side seats....

I sold my 70 cause it was a serious pain in the ass to keep loading my kid in the back.

Karl

Sometime I regret my 60. But I'm not regret my BJ70. Not at all. I have 2 kid and I'm go camping severale time in a year with a roof rack and a "basket" in my hitch.

... and 10 000 - 12 000$ I't not a bad price for a rust free CDM BJ70. That is the price I should ask if I'm seeling my 70.

My opinion.

$10 - 12,000 is an INSANE amount to ask for a 70 with well over 300,000km. Period. It is a fair price to ask for a 70 with 100,000km.

Tell me you're kidding man...

About the kids in the back situation, I have a 1.5 year old and yes, it is a total PITA getting him in & out of that car seat. As Wayne mentioned before, the 77 series is definately the way to go for someone with kids. But I personally dont like the look of the 4 door 70 series at all, so when it comes time to load him in the car seat I just have to grin and bear it... Either way, any 70 series is an incredible truck, but they are alot more common now so dont get raped by someone at a used car lot.

A CDM with that many K's on it has most likely been painted. Check for masking lines in the door jams. Also, check the frame for excessive rust. If it's been painted I wouldn't pay that kind of cash. Nobody gets a good quality paint job and then sells their truck to a dealer IMO.

Actually, I'm pretty sure I know of the truck he's looking at, and it does have the factory decal kit ( if I'm thinking of the right one ). Regardless, with that mileage its probably worth like 8 grand TOPS. You can view the ad for it on canadatrader.ca - now I know why the mileage is not listed...

Sorry, autotrader.ca

Just checked autotrader.ca, looks like its not the same truck. The one listed there is an 88 BJ70 JDM - with lift & 33s for $10,900. Litespeed, you may want to look this one up... I'll bet it has less mileage...

OK, there a LOT of thing to consider before pricing a truck.

For sure… or maybe, the seller (the one who sell is 70 to the dealer) maybe do not the half of the thing I done on my 70 serie.

[...]

Considering my 70 serie run like a charm and there is NOTHING TO DO in a the next month… next year…. Yes, I think I worth … at least, 11 000$... here in Québec. Maybe not that much in the west side of Canada.

…. But I just don’t want to sell it.... and it have "just" 260 000km ... not over 300 000km

who's to say what this 300,000 + km 70 has had done to it... The seller thinks it has 1 "spare" battery. 'nuf said. litespeed, like Wayne said just arrange to take it to him to check it out. But its overpriced.

Thats an impressive list of service work David*BJ70...

seriously,
km is really irrelevant in the long run. 300,000 is getting up there BUT if the unit has been well maintained and has good compression then that isn't bad.
i would rather buy a unit with 300,000 maintained miles than a 150,000 km unit that has been neglected or abused.

when looking at a JDM unit either know the guy youa re buying from or gat a copy of the Japanese auction sheet...roll backs are VERY common occurance over there, espec if they are shipping out of country...

cheers

<side seats are out of a 40?
