Anyone out there running a BJ42 Td?

#1 -
I was taking the ole BJ to a car show last weekend - cruising down the interstate at 80 - and she flat out lost power.

I am thinking it's the waste gate - but I did the simple thing and replaced the fuel filter and boost hose.

NADA - some I'm thinking it is the waste gate actuator (boost) -

Anyone ever have a similar experience?

There is a hose on the intake side of the engine that comes up from the bottom and looks to have connected into the throttle body- I think I broke it lose somehow -

When you start the vehicle it goes into FULL idle - smokes like hell - and I'm turning it off as soon as I start it. I found the broke hose when I went back under the hood with a flashlight....

It doesn't look like it would have directly connected on the throtle body where it does- it's dark out - wonder if I broke a fitting?

Thanks in advance for the help/feedback

That throttle body hose is very important, it can rev freely without it. I’m sure that is your issue, make sure both hoses are very secure at both ends.

I’ll replace it tomorrow. It looks like the original was Gerry rigged. Anyone have a picture of what the proper install looks like?

Thank you!

You should should have two(2) clear rubbery type hoses going from your injection pump up to your throttle body. These recognize normal vacuum which tell the pump when to advace, etc. these two hoses are only held by a barbed fitting as there was very little pressure non aspiraterd. When we turbocharge, we introduce pressure which can and will blow those hoses off, thus signaling to the injection pump to increase fuel. Normailly scares the hell out of you as the engine races. Rplace the hoses and secure them on the barbed fittings with hose clamps or zip ties. Hope this helps.

I’m going to replace them both tomorrow.

I’m still trying to figure out the low boost issue.

Going to fix those lines - replace the air filter - then test the waste gate and will start looking for a leak somewhere in the boost side of the turbo.

The wastegate is pressure actuated - not vacuum actuated - anyone have any ideas on how to test it?

Vacuum version I’ve heard you can clamp your actuator like to test it - not sure on a pressure actuated waste gate.

Definitely check/replace and secure the two hoses going to the throttle body. Also, you may be due for a new injestion pump diagram, I've never had one blow on a turboed 3B but have on a naturally aspirated motor and experienced the same high idle and smoke you did.

THANKS TEAM! - love this site - will be replacing the vacuum lines to the throttle body today and see if that is the fix for the loss of turbo pressure. will keep ya posted.

I use thicker OD fuel line and put fuel injection line clamps on to prevent them from disconnecting. They look like mini T-clamps. Any auto parts store has what you need just bring in your old hose to size it. I like them cus they don't cut the hose when you clamp them hard like a regular gear clamp does. The outer edges are also beveled to preserve the hose.

FIXED FIXED - FIXED and FIXED....

I have boost again -

Thank GOD I knocked that damn dry-rotted line off or I never would have figured this out!

SO much help - all golden now!

I'll post pictures when it quits raining - :)

I went back with the factory style. The line I got was too small (inner diameter) so I'll go back and replace it later - but 10lbs of boost is back - she is running like a charm!
