So I’m trying to breath life into a 97 factory locked 80. I bought it from a guy who had the front driveshaft explode on him and take out the trans. I replaced the trans with a new one and now I’m tackling the knuckle that was leaking after the previous owner “rebuilt” it. SO the issue that I’m having is that I CANT GET THE BIRF OUT.
The method:
I have the flat spots on the birfield positioned to the 6 and 12 o clock position, start to pull the birfield out, but it hits the ball of the axle directly outboard to the upper and lower trunion bearings.
questions:
1. Could the previous owner warped the ball of the axle by over torquing the trunion bearings?
2. Am I stupid and doing something wrong
3. If I do get the birfield removed, how risky is it to keep the front axle unlocked when putting the shaft back in. Because the relay for the front locker does actuate, but the light doesn’t turn on and the cdl doesn’t lock.— it’s either stuck because it wasn’t ever used, or because I forgot to plug something in
