Birfield CV vs Ball joint (1 Viewer)

Am I correct in thinking that the ball joints were not used in 69 and newer 40's? That would mean that front axles from 70-newer were birfield cv joints? With all of that being clarified for me, would I be able to follow my FSM for 72-74 40's to rebuild a 78 front axle that has discs?
