I recall reading a few Mobil technical documents discussing oil bleeding from the thickener; they said it wasn't necessarily a bad thing and to see if any oil laying on top of the grease could be mixed down into the rest of the grease going down a short distance. It said some oil bleeding from the grease can be a good thing to a point as it's the oil that's providing the lubrication, not the thickener. IIRC the documents said if the oil will not mix back into the grease then it's bad and to toss it.

Intetesting. Will try to store spare cartridges upright. Not so easy once its in a gun

In my scenario, there would have been no way to salvage the oil that's run out into a dirty 20 litre storage tub, and not really practical to mix have into grease in a cartridge.
