Birfield and bearing grease? (1 Viewer)

Well this came up in chat and I thought it would be a tech question.

Why can't you repack the birfield with multipurpose grease?

And why can you not pack bearings with molly grease?

I use the same cheap grease for everything. I have it apart often enough that it doesnt matter.

I think the FSM specifies Lithium/ Molybdenum. The stuff I used was Valvoline, I think and it came in tubes and butter-dish cans. I put the outer axle in a vise and used the needle attachment to grease the Birfs, rotating as I went, and I was surprised at how much you can get inside the Birf.

Two different purposes.
Birfs need moly grease because it has moly in it Moly is a high pressure /sliding/ lubricant - use it where two surfaces slide - which is what happens in a birf.
WBs need a wb grease which is hi temp so it doesnt melt when the brakes get hot. But also, moly is not suited for this as it encourages the bearings to slide rather than turn.
