The birf splines seem to be double grooved for two snap rings, what's up?

That's actually to fit the special pliers he holds the birf with during and after polishing. Polishing the birfs increases the MPG's due to lower friction in the grease bath. The only way to do better would be to disconnect the front drive somehow.
 
Does the piece on the far right side plug into the piece on the upper left?

What was your process to clean up the outside so thoroughly like that? Just a bunch of elbow grease? Looks great by the way
