Went through the FAQ and search and there so many opinion, part numbers and measurments that my head is spinning. Alot of the info is old too, so I'm not sure if it's outdated.

So, just a quick question for those in the know. Assuming Bilstiens are superior to the OME shocks, which is the part number most recommend for an 80 with a OME 2.5 lift, no spacers. And will this bolt right up, or do I need some of adapter that I think I reading about somehwere in all those post?

Sorry, I know this is a very reduntant topic.

The Bilsteins (B46-1477 / B46-1478) will bolt right up out of the box. However, when I installed mine, I reused the OEM washers as they look beefier.

Then what is the adapter deal?

For these shocks, they'll bolt right up. No adapter needed. :D

I thought those shocks were only good for a max 2 inch lift?
Of course you add bumpers, winch, sliders and your 2.5 inch lift is more like 1.5-2???

Are you happy with your set up? I am thinking of changing my springs to what you have. I am already running the Billies.

Thanks

It only means the Bilsteins won't yield as much droop as the OMEs.

I've tried a few springs/shocks combinations and my current setup is thus far the best compromise for my type of drivings (mostly on road, long weekend trips + a step-up in off-roading capability).

So, when these bilsteins are fully extended, how much shorter are they than the N73/N74 OME's?

What are your goals? Unless you are planning to run 35's on your 2.5" lift, I'm not sure there is that much to be gained by not choosing the OME shocks that are part of the kit you are planning.

I generally like Bilstein shocks over OME, but we need to keep in mind that a shock is a spring dampener, and therefore it makes sense to have a shock that is tuned (valved) to your springs. So you could end up with a suspension that isn't in balance by using a "better" Bilstein shock with OME springs.

My valving is quite soft, but I don't have OME springs. I think OME relies on a tighter shock with more dampening to go with their springs, so despite my advocacy of Bilstein 5100 as a great all around offroad shock, if I am buying OME medium I am buying the kit.

Of course, I think by the time you get 2-3" on an 80 you can run 35's cleanly, so I'm not buying OME at all :D

Bilstein question with OME 2.5 lift

A week or 2 ago I went offroading and noticed a jingle in my rear.
Never thought the worse of it.

Anyway several days ago I saw my front driver side was dropped a bit.

The OME shock was the culprit. Upon checking the rear shocks I found the same problem. OME was gone. Still some gas left in them, but I could compress them by hand.

Having previously ordered bilsteins for another 4x4, I've decided to order them as a replacement.

So I guess OME do a good job, but bilstein does an even better one.
