After a lot of time going back and forth on if I wanted to create a build thread I finally decided to. So I'm 21 years old I have built a lot of car's and my off road vehicle before this was an 1981 cj7. I went to school for classic car restoration and I found an 86 fj60 land cruiser 1 year after I graduated college. I thought that this would be the perfect expidition build because I planned on doing a lot of traveling when time aloud. With trips planned to yellow stone in the winter and Alaska I knew I needed a vehicle that could meet some requirements. 4x4 with great ground clearance and rough and rugged dependability and also it had to look cook. So the obvious choice for this a land cruiser. To get on with the build, this vehicle had to be able to sleep between 2-5 people at an time so I needed a roof top tent, that I sorced through cragslist for 600 brand new in the box a smittybuilt unit. A no Brainerd for me then next up was a sleeping platform. This vehicle also needed good food storage being the foodie I am. So a fridge freeze was the next purchase could not afford an arb unit so I found a whyner on craglist also for 400$ brand new couldn't pass that up. Next up was a way to charge all supplies like phones and speakers and dog remote collars, since I will be traveling with my pit bull luna. So I decided trying something a bit different and going with a 12v deep cycle battery and a solar panel mounted on the roof to charge this. But for the people who love pics let's start from the beginning.

The build platform

An fj60 with some bad wheel arch rust some roof rust with no interior that has been sitting for over 9 years not running. Shortly after the purchase like most gear head I got to work on the motor and electrical (to be more precise the next day.) I found that much of the electrical on the coil wiring and rear wiring loom had been chewed out by mice. after seeing this I started up the soldering iron and got to work. After rewiring the ignitor a shot of starting fluid and a new battery she turned over, and ran off starting fluid.

After seeing the truck started I pushed it out side gave it a quick wash and started grinding to see how bad the rust was.

After repairing all the floor rust, I decided to go ahead and start adressing one of the main flaws of the fj60. The fact they are so loud on the interior to do this I fitted the floor board, doors and rear quarters with dyna mats cheap brother peal and seal.

Wow man, I think I would just cut the whole roof off, repair all hidden rust, then weld it back on.
I didn't have a good parts car to do that with at the time whitch I do now and that kind of sucks but I am moving to California shortly and figured the since the humidity isn't a big problem there I would be okay

After doing a lot of research I found out that there are 3 different types of sound deadening to take care of I decided doing the peel and seal, 6mm ccf and 3/4 hdf hoping this would take care of all the noise. I knew that I had to make new carpet and everything else myself I started on this to finsh up the rest of the interior. With the rear carpet fitting I started making rear curtains from scratch. Found some low pro curtain rods I like and got them all fitted up

Damn getting after it like a champ son!! Nice work on getting it taken care of. And definitely cool that your lady is helping along with your furry helper.

After getting the carpet mounted I purchased a good set of grey and pin striped seats no rip or tear's and a tailgate and lift gate off cragslist for 400. A steal of a deal seeing what they are going for online. After I purchased all this I decided on going on to tackle some metal working projects and body work.

Greg, that is too reminiscent of that creep on walking dead.... "...like a champ!"

I'll agree Randy your doing a great job for 21 and a brand new member here on mud. Congrats! Keep it up and I'll keep watching. I dig the blue and the retro curtains.

LOL... you are talking about Neegan! He is an awesome character. Definitely one of those characters that just isn't evil/bad for the sake of it, you can tell he is intelligent, calculating and vindictive. Jeffrey Dean Morgan (or whatever his name is) is a great actor in roles like that!

After getting the passenger side wheel arch metal working done, I moved to the driver side. And there was a lot more rust on that side. To the point where I had to remake the c channel all by hand. And not having any metal working tools but a vice a hammer and a welder this was a big challenge.

Good to see young people taking an interest in trucks nearly 10 years older than them. Nice seats.

After a few days of welying and grinding I decided to finish the passenger side body work to take a little break.
