thinking of trying to head up this weekend for a snow run if trails are open...any body interested?

Mark, I'm going to try and go up Weds afternoon with my daughter to scope out some sled ridin' hills. I may be up for a weekend trip if it falls through or is so successful it must be repeated ;)

live update of conditions

We went out and about on Sunday during the brief snow. It was nice, but it was also very deceiving how little snow actually fell on north side of big bear. Great fun to be the first one breaking snow on a trail, even if it was only 6". It is warming up a lot this week and should cause some nice ice to make things a little more challenging.

Ok, so I went up today to do some sled riding with my daughter. We were up in the Hanna Flats area and there was plenty of snow around 6-10" deep depending on where you were. Late in the afternoon we headed down Holcomb Creek. Quite a bit of the dirt roads were completely clear of snow but plenty of deep puddles and - dare I say it - MUD. Of course the NE-facing sections were still solid snow pack that was now pretty icy and slippery. The creek crossing is only about hub deep and the climb up the other side is pretty clean. It's only once you get past that and make that sharp right hand hairpin and start climbing a bit that the trail is really iced over and pretty sketchy without chains. This might improve with more warm weather by the weekend but for now it'd be tough to do some of the harder lines. Weather was fantastic though and visibility was amazing.

more updates...

went back up to do some more sled riding before the snow melted.

Pretty much everything that isn't on a N-NE facing slope is melted off. Even on the cooler slopes above 7800-ft it was pretty mushy. Just enough to squeeze in some rides.

Went back to Holcomb Creek and the trail is downright muddy! The horror. Pic of the truck shows what most of the slopes look like now. It was nearly empty again today but going down the mtn the masses were already trekking up by the thousands.
