Took my 71 down to bare metal with wire wheel and 5” angle grinder, used sand blaster for small areas that I couldn’t get with the angle grinder. Used endura primer and paint…I’m not too sure what we did wrong, the finish only last about 4 years in the places where we welded, 18 years later it needs to be done again, I don’t remember what the material costs were, probably between 400-600 dollars in paint and primer. I guess looking back on it, 18 years is pretty good for amateur body work. Here is condition now, thinking about taking tub off again, doing more work on the frame and re working the tub - but I just got this thing back, I’d like to enjoy It for a bit before taking it out of commission.

Is that body filler under the paint in the first pic?

Body filler can crack over time, esp. on body panels that flex. That looks like body fill failure to me, FWIW.

Yes it can. Next go round use a better filler. Rage Gold or 3M Premium Platinum Plus. You have to make sure your metal is clean and 80 grit scuff for the filler to have a good bond. A lot of people today say to apply filler to epoxy primer, but I have not seen that recommended by any manufacturer of filler.

I think you actually caught the issue, believe this was just really cheap filler I bought at Canadian tire, or maybe even a local home hardware. Never even thought there was different qualities of filler - Oh, to be young again.

Thank you for this.
