I've been dreaming of having a diesel engine put in my 87 60 series. Just wanted to get some opinions about which one you guys would suggest. What could I expect for mpg for your favorite engine? Also does anyone use biodiesel and is there any risk of damaging anything? Thanks -

It all comes down to what you want the vehicle to do.

For reliability, and off road ability (ie low down grunt) the 2H is a brilliant engine.

The next step up would be the 1HZ motor, not fitted as standard to the vehicle, but almost as good offroad and as reliable.

For city and highway use perhaps a more modern turbo diesel (to help with going up hills near the speed limit, and acceleration/keeping up with traffic)

Options here would include the new V8 tubo diesel as used in the new 7x models and the 200 series.

The more modern you go, the more things to go wrong offroad (electronics etc) the older you go the more problems with wear and tear.

Older motors will run on crappy fuel if you're travelling internationally, newer motors with their emissions gear and efi wont be as happy.

The easiest motors to put in would be the 2H and 12HT as they were factory fitted.

20-24mpg, better with a lighter foot, worse with a turbo+foot. Biodiesel is no problem.. WVO will have the normal temperature issues (have to have it up to a minimum operational temp to start using it).

The newer stuff is quieter. The 1HZ is a nice smooth rumble compared to the tractor-like melody from a 3B, 2H or 12H-T.

Do not do a diesel for mileage. It's just a bad way to approach the swap. They are very expensive and you have to deal with uncommon parts and strange looks from parts people. Diesel motors in general are like this.

All that said, opinions will be many and varied. I love my 1HZ(turbo'd) after just a couple weeks of driving it. I don't want to drive it because it is so much fun. It accelerates like a train but is not quick off the line(probably due more to the H55 gearing). It just keeps pulling in 5th gear from about 45mph on up. It has issues... SOHC so you adjust valves with shims, and you have to replace the timing belt(only a couple bolts). But putzing down dirt roads with that quiet rumble is going to be great. I landed on it because I wanted to get up mtn passes without much effort, loaded down with gear, and I wanted extended range on a tank of fuel.

After owning two 3B trucks (non-turbo), driving a 13B-T for a couple months, a 12H-T all over Moab and a bit locally, and having spent some time around another 1HZ conversion, and a few Cummins 4BTs, I have to say that Toyota knows what the heck they are doing with their diesel motors and seem worth the "rarity" expense. They just do it well, and the engines feel like they are working more effortlessly than the domestic counterparts. Take with a grain of salt.

I also think the turbo is a win for the Toyota motors and the engine turns into a completely different animal when one is added. You still need to go easy and be meticulous about maintenance to get the fabled 300,000+ miles out of one.

If you come to McGew Trail Ride this year, you will get to see at least a couple. :)

I love the 2H - I had a UK spec HJ62 for 9 years and sold it cause emigrated .

But given a choice I would go for the 1HZ . Just newer technology .

Are you sure it was an HJ62 an not a 61? I know it was your truck, but we're debating if there really was a HJ62 in this thread. Did it say "HJ62" on the vin plate?

I assumed it was a HJ62 - has all the characteristics of a 62 but was diesel ( 2H ), 1988 and 24Volt .

I stand corrected - must have been a HJ60

Cool, sorry for the hijak.

I'm a proponent of the argument that the best toyota diesel engine is the inline 6 that was produced most recently, as in the 1HZ series. They bolt onto our transmissions, fit well in our engine bays and produce plenty of power with good economy. I'll be swapping to a 1HZ at some time in the future.

What do you want from your engine . ?

12H-T it's really niiiceee engine .. just short period of production and short part available around the world ..

2H only with turbo .. as same as 1HZ ..

1HD-T ..

I'd actually want a 1HD-T, I lied in my last post.

As long as it's an inline 6 for a 60, you really can't go wrong.

12HT - it was made for the '60 series and bolts right up.

Shameless plug.... I've got mine listed for sale in the Diesel/JDM Parts forum....

there is no such beast as a HJ62 (just like the mythical BJ55)

IMO the 1HD-FT is the best.

They fixed the BEB problems from the 1HD-T and gave it a four valve head.
It's still a mechanical engine and shouldn't need a guru to get it running.
Being direct injection it's good on fuel and starts easy.

I don't know if this is a great first post on the forums, but I'm contemplating doing an engine swap in an J80 series... It would be my daily driver after the swap and it's likely to see 200000 miles or more while I own it. Spending $10000 on a swap to an engine that makes the truck MOVE when I put down the throttle and lets it get 20-24MPG seems to just make sense... over the 1FZ or 3F gas engines available in North America. The 3F is a sloth and the 1FZ is exceptional but not stellar.

This thread has me back contemplating the 1HD-FT, but it has the expense of pricey and hard to find parts.

parts are not hard to find if you know where to look.

you have to WANT to do the swap, if you WANT to then the REASON to do the swap is really irrelevant.

you can buy a lot of gas for $10,000 (and BTW $10K will NOT do the swap properly).

the 1FZ pulls harder than the HDT.

Same search

I did a similar search awhile back when looking for a cruiser. Contemplated swapping or buying a diesel import. The thread is https://forum.ih8mud.com/diesel-tech-24-volts-systems/254779-h-vs-b-motor.html

Came away from the thread with excellent information. MUD is the best place for info. Eventually wound up buying a BJ60 with a 3B/H55f drivetrain. 3Bs are slow to accelerate, but freeway speed hasn't been an issue. Hills are a tad slow, but I was looking for the most mechanical diesel motor. It will become the family cruiser and hopefully my kids can drive to my funeral in it.:p

I'd love to have my old BJ60 back with the NA 3B. I miss that truck except I'd want to swap the 4 speed for a 5 next time. My fav. toy diesel bar none. Slow, bulletproof, efficient and sounds like a farm implement.

agree on the 3b(NA) I have mine mated to the 5 spd and it is a slow yet powerfull little set up
I still am amazed at the performance of a ~90 hp engine and a ~6K lb vehicle
Comparable mpg to a chevy cobalt:cool:
