I don't have a 61, but I have thought about adding a racor to my rig.

I would put it in the back right part of the engine compartment.
Lots of room back there.
It's the perfect spot, as its right next to the injection pump, and stock fuel filter.
I would put the racor in line as soon as the fuel line enters the engine compartment and before the stock filter.

I beileve most racor filters also are water seperators with a green and red light, so it would be easy to move those into the cab. Possible mod the "fuel" light and put the green and red LED behind it. But if your going mod the light housing, you will want to remove the stock water filter, because your racor would be infront of it. So you would not want your stock one, as if it ever plugs/fills you will have no way of knowing since you removed its light.

Also, just to add, my girlfriends 3B powered FJ55 has it in the right back.
Not sure how it is exactly plummed in.
Cruiser_guy would know better because he installed it when be build the truck!

Cheers,
Nick :)

Anyways, here is the pic of the engine back.
Lots of room in the back right.

Nick, it's actually harder than it looks to get a Racor 6-series filter/seperator mounted on the firewall. They are very long and you must remember that you need another 6-8 inches under the bottom to both drain the water petcock and remove the filter itself. I looked everywhere on the 70 and found the very front corner to be a good option. From here you can reach up and drain the bowl from time to time.

Also, I wonder if running two fuel filters inline is going to cause a problem with flow? Imagine making your coffee in the morning and doubling up the paper filters, chances are your water will back up and spill over the top.

I don't think it would.
Coffee is drip/gravity fead.
The pump is sucking the fuel from the tank.
I don't think having 2 fuel filters would make that big of difference.
No worse than one being partly clogged.

But I could be wrong.
It has happened. :)

My girl friends turbo 3B is somewhat slugish right now (not enough fuel)
Cruiser_guy is getting a new fuel filter today.
I guess we will see if that fixes it.
If not, it could be the 2 fuel filters in the line.
We will have to see.
This will be a good test, seeing as the racor is already installed.

Cheers,
Nick

If the pump system is designed to draw or push fuel through a 20 micron filter, and you install a 30 micron filter inline with the orginal, then I agree with you (though this would seem pointless). If you install a 5 micron filter, then how do you propose to offset the resulting loss in fuel flow? You've essentially added 6 times the resistance through the filter system without increasing the pump output. The feeder pump that supplies the injector pump is going to struggle to do its job.

Good point.
However, right now my truck has a Wix fuel filter on it (not and OEM).
Stone put it on. Apparently it has a much higher micron filtering level.
Yet the truck can still bury they pryo needle in the red if I put my foot in it.
Now given, I am not sure how big of gap there is between the Wix and OEM.
Maybe the OEM does 20, and the Wix does 15? Not sure.

But wouldn't a fuel filter as it wasn't clogging get harder and harder to pull from as tome pass? People run fuel filters can run for years. I bet it spends months/years in the "half plugged' state before its bad enought for us to notice. Or so gradual that we don't notice the lack of fuel/power until it starts sputtering and idle and in hills etc...

Put yet in pumps still pull for a hundreds of thousands of KMs.
So I wonder if having a half plugged fuel filter hurts the pump.
Not sure. I would think a mechanical pump could deal with it without issue.

Anyways, these are my random thoughts. Please feel free to correct.
They are my no means for certain. My thoughts are just that: thoughts.

Wherlwind:
So back to the orginal question.
You have lots of options.
I would think back right is good for the 61.
But as Island Moose pointed out, make sure you have easy access for draining, and that mounting is not a huge pain.

Cheers,
Nick

BTW: I am all for regurlary chaning the fuel filter.
Once a year is what I like.
Cruiser_guy cross refference my Wix with a Donaldson at Finning/CAT yesterday.
About $7 for the Donaldson. Anythoughts what is the best fuel filter.
I will not put crap like Fram on my truck.
But between Wix/Donaldon/OEM-Toyota, any thoughts?

Cheers,
Nick
