Hello,
Sorry if this has ben covered before bt I couln't find anything.

I want to swap my 2F engine in the 81 FJ40 to a more modern and MUCH more economical (preferably) diesel engine.

Maybe some folks here have done this and can advise on what engines are good for this and easiest to install.

I have seen a 12HT conversion but it appears to be rather difficult to do with many mods?

Kind regards
berntd

There are a massive number of things that will effect your decision, eg. budget, location, skills and facilities avaliable, local laws, etc...

But the easiest way to get a diesel in an FJ40 is to buy a BJ40.

Do a search and you will find heaps of threads and if you supply more info people will be able to give you better info.

Hi
Thanks for the reply!

I am quite skilled with welding, fabricating, turnig and ideas.
I would call it off at changing chassis, moving firewall, making engine mounts, making manifolds and making radiators. Don't want to and do not have enough time left.

Yea, I also thought BJ40 but one can't find any here without there being a vehicle attached :-) Also, I am not sure if that old motor is actually economical enough to justify the whole aggrivation.

I am in Sydney, Australia.

Here in Aus there isn't really any question selling your FJ and buying a BJ is the cheapest easiest option. As for the motors they are very economical ( A BJ40 will do 10L/100KM no worries) but they aren't the most powerful thing going. But in saying that there are a whole new generation of newer engines that will bolt straight in to a BJ40 with no need to fabricate mounts or anything like that, you can easily upgrade to a 13BT, 14B, 15B or 15BT, they are everywere and can be had for a reasonable price. Search the diesel section for more details.

Cummins b3.3t..............1 wire-engine mounts-

-no height/size issues as with 4bt
-variety of tranny combos
-phoenix castings adapter plate
-full mechanical like 4bt without the size issues.
-550lbs vs 750lbs
-can get a factory zero mile engine........vs used.3b, 2h.etc
-warranty
-dont have to spring over

The original poster lives in Sydney Australia, the land of cheap old toyota engines. Any truck wreckers will have piles of running B series toyota engines at a good prices. They smaller cummins engines aren't as widely used over here and will be more expensive and much more difficult to locate.

Location is the biggest factor when deciding which swap to do, what is the cheapest and easiest swap in one part of the world is damn near impossible in another.

From personel experience I can advise that you do your reseach thoroughly, investigate all your options and shop around, If you are in a rush to buy and engine you will take the first thing that comes along which could be a mistake.

Hi All:

I would imagine the 2H would be the easiest swap for a 2F. The 2H should bolt-up to the H41 transmission in the FJ40 (the "F" and "H" Series engines both accept a ten-spline output shaft.) I don't know, but you might get lucky and find the engine mounts the same as well.

Swapping in a "B" series Toyota engine will require a different transmission, probably re-locating the engine mounts as well.

For more/better feedback consider posting up in the Diesel and 24 Volt section.

Good luck!

I am nearly a 100% sure every diesel out there will require custom mounts. Those aren't really that hard. I am currently in the process of putting in a 1HZ with a turbo and a H55 in my forty. I picked it because its super easy to wire up. I have seen one wired in less than a half hour. In OZ there should be plenty of those. I like the 1HZ because it has similar specs to a 2F, but gets much better gas mileage. I didn't want a ton of power added. 40s were never meant to go fast in my opinion. Also I wanted to stick with a Toyota engine. Another reason I took a 1HZ is because besides the 3B they are more commonly available and newer than a 12HT or a B series. I can still get a lot of parts for it new, which is nice.

A 2H would be a resonably easy swap, it would match the tranny but would still require customs mounts.

But here in Oz BJ40/42's are a dime a dozen and a very similar price to a FJ40. It would be alot of effort to do an engine swap to convert a FJ40 to diesel when you can by a factory diesel so easily (remember were the berntd lives, he is in a different situation from those of you in the US), And if he wants more power the newer B series engines will pretty much bolt straight into the BJ40/42.

Hello all,

I do not need more power. I need MUCH better economy as I can't afford the fuel prices that will keep rising forever more.

I was also considerign a mercedes 300d OM617 5 cylinder engine. I think that would be really hard converion to do on the Toyota and it would possible be a littel low on power.

I would not mind buying a factory diesel (B series) as I like my stuff original but I have in the past 2 years never come across one for reasonable money or not completely rusted out.
I really like the 40 series because it is so much like an old Landrover. A real car, like they used to be. Just look at the cool dash and heater...

However, the only really economical engines (to today's standards) are the more modern ones. In tghe end, I will need one of those as everything else, will be like throwing money down the tube in fuel cost.

I will not rule out petrol engines either as there seem to be some pretty economical ones as well?

Hey, i a copy of my van came along, that was diesel, I would buy it and sell mine.

Decision, decisions...:bang:
