the look and appearance of the drawings produced (I'm still talking 2D) look sloppy when compared to an acad drawing that's been drawn by someone who cares about their drawing appearance, layout, and accuracy.

That is probably because you haven't went throught all the things that can be done and modified when creating a layout.
I personnaly use inventor everyday. Inventor 10 pro comes with FEA with assemblies. I was a long time Autocad user, and now that i mastered inventor, no way i'll go back to autocad to even do a 2D layout. You draw the model and in a couple of clicks you have your 2D layout with all imaginable projected views you want.

True, I have not spent enough time with it, I have Inventor 2008, and acad 2007. The same thing happens with acad as well, we receive a lot of vendor drawings that are just horrid, everything drawn on layer 0, exploded blocks/hatching...ugh, the list goes on.

Often when you receive a CAD like this, it's because they use a 3D cad software, and simply export or convert to a CAD, resulting CAD drawing like that. I usually insist on getting STEP files.
