Helping my brother buy a 100 series. I'm more versed in the 60/62. I know that 2006 in 2007 were big upgrades as far as horsepower, five speed automatic transmission and the fuel injection improvements, mpg too I would assume.

Would you say these are the best years for 100s? Also, very importantly are they worth what seems like a marked premium over 98-05? I think so but could use some insight!

Great, thanks...

i don't think the premium is worth it compared to 2001-2005, the 06 and 07 are still highly priced where I'd be aiming for a 200 instead.

The best bang for buck are usally found in the 98-05 range.

OK, good point thanks...what about if price were equal, wouldn't you go 06 or 07 over 03-05?

Yes. But even that depends...will throw in the caveat of mileage/condition/service history. All variable should be taken into account.

Yes of course... I guess what I'm saying is if condition, maintenance and mileage are similar would dare be specific in years. I personally would love having the extra horse power, 5AT and VVT. But depends on use too! Found a 99 with only 83K miles. It's great but undercarriage was definitely sprayed with undercoating. Doesn't look to be rusted and could be preventative but also could be a red flag. Thanks for all the insight

on the Lexus VIN check site, make sure you're not entering a zero as the letter 'o' and vice versa. it took me a couple tries to get my VIN in there correctly.

a search here will yield a bunch of different opinions on the VVT-I horsepower bump of the 06' and 07'. I think the one thing all owners can agree on is the 100 is a heavy ass vehicle and every pony under the hood helps. And in a 3 ton vehicle the extra 30+ horsepower is not going to make a huge "seat of the pants" difference.

That being said I specifically went after an 07' for the extra power.

03 to 05 with DT headers and 3 inch exhaust is pretty good as well. :<)

I know the cali crew has issues with CARB.

I have zero experience with 06 and 07. I would 06 and 07 with no AHC.

The challenge is when the buy price gets close to a 200 series with 381 hp and 400 ft lbs of torque.

FWIW does the OP know that the 5 speed is in all 2003-2007 100 series trucks.

Long live the 98 - closest cousin to the 80 - no VSC. ATRAC and VSC would definitly be nice in snow and ice......but a 98-99 separates the real drivers

Yes, I meant the 5AT with VVT. Would you say '99 with 80K is a great option? Can't figure out if it has the rear locker...

Actually his brother does. There is no substitute to making the investment in educating yourself.
My $.02 is that it's worth prioritizing the 5spd tranny, but only worrying about the vvti if there is good value there, which there often isn't (probably because a lot of people place a premium on the few non-AHC ones).
you need this:

I have both an 06 and 07, and I will say the only that worries me is many electronics are different because of the vvti, so I worry a little bit about long term availability.

Neither have AHC so I can’t speak to that.
