My rear axles are bent just enough to make my 35's wobble going down the road. I'm going to be doing a rear disc conversion soon and figure I'll do the axles at the same time.

Mine is a '77 fj40, mostly stock, other than the lift. Future plans are for an sbc, lockers, and a very long term restore.

So, what should I consider when I get ready to replace these axles? I'm not up to speed on the ff & semi float thing. I hear you guys talking about different spline counts and so forth.

What's a good strong replacement axle? What supplier offers the best service and overall deal? Are the chromoly's from MAF & SOR any good?

Thanks in advance!

what's your budget? Mud is great for spending other peoples' money.

I don't know how one bends a rear axle shaft but I guess one could break an anvil if they hit it hard enough. Are you absolutely certain it's the axle and nor the tires, rims, axle housing, other????? Big tires can have some runout in them plus be challenging to balance. Did you check the runout of the axle shaft or flange? If this is the case then the axle housing may be tweaked as well.

I would first determine the exact cause of the is wobble. Tire? balance them. Rims? straighten or replace them. Bent axleshaft? replace. Bent axle housing? replace.
Spare used rear axleshafts and housings are cheap and plentiful. Make sure the bearing & seal surfaces aren't mucked.

I suppose I should gauge them before I go spend a bunch of money. Have the same wobble with both sets of wheels & tires. I think the right way to do it would be to replace the bearings & seals when I do the brakes regardless. They haven't been replaced in at least 20 years. I'll gauge up the axles first, then decide.
