So I always see people always winning stuff at the raffles (its a drawing and everyone who buys in gets a chance) or getting a sweet cruiser for next to nothing (Butch) or some rare part worth a lot for next to nothing or hell even for free just to get it out of someones way...

Well this weekend I got mine!

Brother in law called me up and said he had an old "heavy duty" winch he bought 10-15 years ago for $100 bucks that was working and has just been sitting in his garage and I could have it if I wanted it. I said sure cause I never pass up free tools or parts if i think I can salvage something off of it. He went on to say he has the remote, the "roller thingy so you can use it in whatever direction" and the cable and all, "its all there and yours if you want it"

When I get the thing I took one look at it and realized it was an old warn 8275! Needless to say I was excited, hell still am! It all moves freely and real easy just like it should and over all looks to be in great shape.

So wanting to know what year it was I called up Warn today and told them I had an old winch and wanted to know what I could find out about it. I gave him the model, serial, date code, and described the clutch handle and the number of prongs on the remote plug and if metal or not. He told me it was a 1979 and "is worth its weight in gold" "those old oil filled things will last forever". This i pretty much knew but it was nice to see someone who knew their product. then I told him I wanted to get new gaskets and paint it up and would also like some new stickers to make it look all new again. He informed me if anything needed replaced he recommended to buy the 8274-50 parts as an assembly for what was needed replacing (if anything) as some of those parts were up grades and are available new vs trying to find the original parts in used condition or paying a premium for a NOS part hiding someplace. I then asked how much a sticker set for it would run, and he informed me all they still had available was the ones for the 8274-50 but they were pretty much the same just a "newer design style" or something like that. I told him ok and asked how much. He then asked my name and address and said he would ship a set to me for FREE! SCORE! I asked if maybe he had a couple that just said Warn so I could stick em on my truck and he told me the sticker set he was sending had quite a few different ones in there and "pretty hefty little stack" of stickers.

Couldn't believe it!
Great customer service, sending some replacement stickers and other swag for free all at the same time. I had read about a couple of other people getting a couple of stickers when they called as well but the post were several years old and who knows their conversations. But I called to find out what year it was just cause I was curious and sure enough I got some too.
Pretty awesome if you ask me.

And now here are a couple of shots I took when I first saw the thing. Like I said I plan to tear it all down and go through it paint it all up and make it look like new with proper stickers, paint colors, ect. I have nothing invested so I figured it was worth the money spend to re-furb it before going on one of my Land Cruisers.

That won't look right on any of your trucks. However it would look good on a 1969 FJ40. Just saying.

I think you need a set of bead locks first... :flipoff2:

Better make sure you remember your brother-in-law when it comes time for Christmas, Birthdays, and Brother-In-Law days!

Nice score man!
Flintknapper rebuild thread was very helpful for when I was doing mine, as were several strategically placed rare earth magnets!

I'd also recommend
Dealers Truck Supply

for replacement Warn parts. I called several authorized Warn service / parts centers and they were always the cheapest by far and they are in Arkansas so shipping was always really quick.

Great score!

+1 on Flintknapper's rebuild thread; everything you need to know about these winches is there.

Seeing how yours came out is why I wanted to restore mine. And what is the deal with the magnets??

Thanks for the thread and the business tip info. You coming out tomorrow night?

got one too .... and all the parts to convert it to 24volt :D

You're just going to hurt yourself with that.

Happy to take it off your hands, and by the way, it for sure does fit in an ARB bullbar on a 60. You have to remove the PS light tab, and grind about 1/16 inch off the upright.

Good score.

The rare earth magnets really help keep all the ball bearings in place when you go to reinstall the break mechanism. Some have used a boat load of grease, but don't do it, brake pads and grease aren't a good combo.

I couldn't make it tonight. Daughter had a presentation tonight.
