    OOOOPPSSS!

Queen of Oak Bay stalls 'er coming into Horseshoe Bay and plows into dozens of high-end sailboats and powerboats...reports from passengers via cellphone say they heard the emergency whistle sound, then someone yell out "SKIIIIIPPPPPEEEEERRRRRR!!!"

    This happens

when the ship loses power, they can no longer navigate. Most likely the captain is not at fault, but he wants to slap the maintenance chief upside the head.

I was reading that this ferry recently came back from being serviced.
Seems like a lot of our Washington state ferry incidents happen shortly
    after being "serviced."

Perhaps we shouldn't fix them until they break.

Nonetheless, I'll bet the captain wants to slap the holy garbonzos out of someone.

The first ship I was stationed on in the Navy hit a pier in Subic Bay. It was cool. I was on the forecastle, waiting to raise the ensign, and I could tell that we were going to hit before the bridge announced it over the 1MC. I braced for shock. We hit the end of the pier dead-on, rode right up on top of it, and slid back down into the water. Good times. Good times.

So, wonder if there's a pair of unused emergency brakes still hanging off the stern? Also known as anchors. Funny how even a seasoned captain can forget the most basic emergency steps to take.

i bet if you dropped the anchors at speed, they'd rip right out and and could even sink the whole boat.

Nope. That's one of the reasons they're there and have saved many a collision.

Ferries in Calgary? To cross the bow river? Or is my geography amiss? Or is that more of that strange Metric Humour from Canada?

"Passenger Marc Landry said about four minutes passed between when the ferry lost power and the crash."

"He said the crew dropped anchor to slow the boat and passengers were told "to make sure they're seated and to brace themselves for impact."

    looks like he dropped anchor...

Things happen. We're all human. It isnt as it it's an airplane that can crash if it looses power. Nobody was hurt as I understand it. Thank God.
