Well....the dealer is replacing the two lower ball joints and control arms. They say the uppers are worn but not in danger of going bad. So, i'm going the cheap way and not replacing the uppers.

Why replace the entire lower control arms? You can press out the lower ball joints and press new ones in with zero damage done to the control arms. That is an excessive repair/parts charge IMHO.
Really?! Because in your photo in post 22 the boot is badly torn. I'd find another mechanic!

If I had it my way I would replace all 4. My dad gave me the old "its not in the budget right now" bull****.
I would have asked Dad to replace the UPPER arms, thanked him profusely for his generosity, and then taken care of the lower joints myself. At least with the lowers you don't have to replace the whole arm. Give Dad a break, it's not "bull****" if his budget is tight.
