Folks, Tim and I are planning a trip down Coyote Canyon to Bailey's cabin (Outside of Anza) the weekend of the Mojave trip. We had done a day trip out there over Christmas ans vowed to return to camp. I really want to do Mojave but I need to do a few closer-to-home trips without having to wrench on my truck during the trip before I venture farther from civilization. So far something breaks almost every time I go out. Mojave is definitely on my bucket list though and I will make it there one of these days.

If any of you are interested the details are below. We first posted this trip on American Adventurist....

The agenda, which is loosely organized to say the least is:

Arrive Friday before dark. We are going to meet at I15 and 76 exit around 2-230PM Friday. Maybe sooner if we can mobilize our families.

Hike Saturday, let the kids play around. Probably not wheel that day though anyone who wants certainly can to their heart's content.

Pack up Sunday and run a trail (TBD, we could discuss while we are there if need be) then head home (maybe stop for dinner on the way depending on how the little ones are holding up).

This is a family and kid friendly trip. Our dogs will join us. Potty breaks will occur with some regularity (ha ha ha). The wheeling will not be that hard.

Here is a link to Bailey's Cabin from Dirtopia

If anyone needs more information or has any ideas to spice up the trip post away.

Bummer, I would like to do this again, but will be at Disneyland celebrating my 7 year old birthday.

No worries, I am sure this destination will make the rounds again.

Frank

Phulcrum heard some rumblings that the cabin might be occupied that weekend. If we find that to be the case, we will defer to the Alder Canyon camping area which is in the same area and is on the map in the Dirtopia link.

Well we had ourselves a fun trip. The weather was great although on the windy side. We did some wheeling while exploring Alder Canyon on Saturday. The food was outstanding and kids/dogs had a blast just messing around with whatever they found.

I met Phulcrum and his brother (Exterra) at the 76 off of I15 around 2PM. It turns out that was probably the latest you wan to depart that area if you want to arrive with time to set up camp during daylight hours this time of the year.

Garrett, would you like to go off roading to Bailey's Cabin?

Daniel wanted to was a window and ended up washing the lower 2/3 of the truck while I gassed it up and got some final supplies.

The following are shots of the scenery and trail on the way down to the cabin.

We got to work setting up camp and feeding kids so I didn't get anymore pictures of Friday night.

Saturday 02/21/2015

We made pancakes among other things and played around the campsite for a few hours.

Some folks from the American Adventurist forum joined us.

Kids doing there thing.

I tried to get the kite going but one of the spars was missing so no luck there.

Matt and I took turns on my guitar.

We started getting ready to head to Alder Canyon. Garrett was ready.

I have some video of our drive to Alder that I need to edit. Words will have to suffice in the meantime. Alder Canyon is a westward climb out of the washes and takes about a half hour or so to get there from Baileys. It is much more protected from wind and has a running creek near the top. We all agreed we would rather camp here in the future. One thing to note, the trail is tight with brush. Much of it is the kind that creates that nice fingernail-on-the-chalkboard sound against your paint. You don't need a locker but a stock IFS vehicle will have to picks lines, back up here and there, that sort of thing at some sections. All you really need is a total disregard for your paint to get there.

We suffer a flat tire on the Exterra on the return. There are some sharp rocks and a good off road tire is your best bet to avoid trouble.

Here is Matt's Exterra climbing one of the turns. This truck does very well for a stock vehicle with no locker.

At top we were rewarded with a short steep hike down to the water. Daniel and Ginger got right in it.

The dogs got to cool their paws.

Daniel off to explore...
IMG_20150221_115754072_zpsgjgnflaq.jpg

Most of us just above the water. As you can see the hike is steep and rocky. Garrett was all smiles on the way down riding on my back.

Claire was taking most of the picture.

Heading back, Baileys is in the wash below in the distance.

Back at camp, Garrett was showing of his new waving skills.

The excitement wore out Ginger.

Daniel crawled into my lap for short rest.
IMG_20150221_151927166_zpsxfdlty5k.jpg

But soon the kids were back at it.

The sun was setting and we got thirsty. Cheers to dads who wear babies!.

And, we got hungry too. Tim's MoJoe griddle was awesome.

We enjoyed a great feast and finished off the night with some choice craft beer accompanied by a stout cigar. That wrapped up Saturday.

Well the Falcone boy's internal alarm clocks went off without a hitch in the pre-dawn hours. They enjoy piling on daddy to get him out of bed.

Small kids, they never let you miss a beautiful sunrise.

Note the clouds. The weather in the distance did not look very inviting. The wind was up and it was definitely colder. We decided to eat and get packed up rather than face any foul weather.

We had an uneventful drive out of the canyon.

It was quite cold in Anza. We air up, gassed up, said our goodbyes and headed home. It was a great trip and best of all? I did NOT have to work on my truck once!
