My 62 has 298,000 mi. on it. I am no mechanic but cannot afford a mechanic for this. Was thinking of doing the tear down myself and letting a machine shop reseat anyone attempt this. I have a book that kinda helps but it looks daunting to me.

It would help if you could explain a little more what you are attempting to do?

(1) top end--remove the head and have a machine shop rebuild it. Search for head gasket replacement threads since this is most of the job (besides what the machine shop does)
(2) "farmer" rebuild--leave the engine in the truck but pull the head and drop the pistons. you can hone the cylinders but I don't think you can bore them out. So if your block is worn, this may not provide the intended results.
(3) remove the engine from the truck and do a full rebuild. You might be better off finding a lower mileage used engine or purchase a rebuilt engine from MAF or something.
