Is there suppose to be a backlight on the shifter to highlight the PRND because mine has none? I know that it is on the instrument cluster, just wondering if it was suppose to be lit on the actual shifter.
Thanks.

Yeah, there's definately supposed to be one. Mine just went out and it's driving me crazy.

I just got the 80 and had not even thought of it until my wife brought it up the other night. Then tonight a buddy of mine said his worked but he has a 94 and I thought I would check to see if this was something that Toyota might have disabled in the "newer" 80s. I guess I will have to track down where and why.

It's common for that bulb to burn out after 10 years. I am pretty sure it's a special Toyota bulb. I orded mine from C-Dan a year ago. It takes about 15 minutes to replace. Just remove the shifter console and there are a couple more screws toward the drivers side to get to the bulb.

Yes it is suppose to be lit but it isn't a special Toyota bulb...

The one on my :princess:'s was out when we bought it...Remove the shift/console cover by removing the 4 screws, (2 on each side), shift the car to D or lower, lift up the cover and unhook the "2nd" and "PWR" button connections, remove the tcase shift knob, and then push in on the shift lock on the shifter and finagle the cover up and off.

Under the shifter you can feel the bulb socket...1/2 turn or so in one direction and the socket comes off. Remove the bulb and if you CAREFULLY remove the little green colored "condom" you can reuse it. Take the burnt out bulb to you local auto parts store to match it up and get a new one. Easy peasy even for this 1  monkey :D

Option 2 would be to order the bulb and "condom" from CDan or your local Toyota dealer.

Thanks for the information. I will probably replace that bulb today if I can track it down locally.

Has anyone confirmed the part number for the replacement bulb?

Thanks.

I hope to get to it this weekend and I will post the light that I use once I get into it.

Type 74 - white with green condom. Same bulb for the floor shifter, key ring, ash tray, glove box, and all the little lights on your instrument cluster.

I replaced mine with a replacement bulb from the local O'Reillys store. I put it in and it worked great for a few days, but then the bulb worked loose from the socket. It took the console back apart :( and tried again. I noticed that if I shoved the bulb firmly into the socket, it forced the 'ears' too far out and the assembly would not fit back into the console.

I guess my next step is to buy one from the dealer. Any ideas??
