Hi all,

Just found out ive got my first little one on the way and im seeing if anyone has any ideas or suggestions on how and where to seat the baby???
Is it safe to fix a baby seat to the original side seats in a troopy?
Id really like to somehow put a seat in that would allow me to fold away to make room for a mattress etc for camping trips.
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers

No,side seating is not really safe for anyone. You best way would be to put a folding bench seat in and fix the baby capsule to that.
You would need to speak to an engineer BEFORE you fit anything.

IMO ,your troopy days are over with a newborn and no back door. Time to get an 80;)

or buy a beater car for hauling the kid and keep the troopie as is...

not sure where you are located but here in Canada they are trying to pass a law that kids up 80 lbs be kept in a car seat..
hell, i know some 80 year olds that are 80 lbs...

He will be looking for a new wife when he tells her he is buying a POS for the baby to ride in:D

My troopy days have just begun tho!!! Im going to get an engineer mate to look into it for me. Got a big round OZ trip planned for July next year, a few months after bub is due. Im thinking ill just put a back bench seat in for the baby and then get a fold out tent that you fit to the roof racks. Im determined not to let the troopy days be over:) Luckily the missus is in love with the troopy as well, otherwise she'd be after a family wagon...

What wears young parents out with troopies and MWB is the lack of a back door to reach in and buckle and unbuckle the baby.
You got time to think about it.

Some of the auto body builders have been doing a rear bench seat modification for some time for the govt and mining companies and they use an aftermarket seat that looks like it came from the factory.

If you could track someone like that down it would be easier. I saw one in a wrecker a while back and I believe it was done in the east somewhere.
It also incorporated a rollbar

Thanks for the advice Rosco, ill go on a bit of a search round the local wreckers and see what i can find. Ive seen a few Troopys with a back door put in as well so i might have a look into that as well. Ill let u know how things go.
Cheers

I had a Jeep wrangler when my baby was born. I can tell you it is a complete PITA to get a baby in and out.

You always have other cr@p to carry as well, bags full of supplies, pushers, food, everything.

Have upgraded to LWB Patrol now, having a door is a must in my books. Apart from anything else, you need to consider the safety aspect, and how quickly you could get the baby out in case of an accident or something.

Although you could mount 1 bucket behind the passenger seat so you can still get to the side of it. The plus side is that if (when) the baby spews you could just hose it out :D

We've had a few come though here that owned MWB and they were in the same boat.
Wife says sell and not too much arguement from hubby.

HZJ75,the 3rd door conversion is done by Polans of Dandenong for about $5.5k : {
I think your in Vic?

Im in Port Macquarie on NSW north coast. Think ill have to pass on the 3rd door idea, way to much for me at the moment. Bucket seat sounds like an option tho... just have to try and stop at 1 kiddy for a while! Sure is a bit of a pickle... might have to give up the troopy days for another 15 years or so. Anyone got any suggestions on a baby friendly 4WD around the $10K-$14K mark??? It has to be good on the sand. The other car i was looking at before the troopy was the 4Runner and Holden Jackaroo or even a Delica. They are nothing compared to the troopy but i guess its time to start thinking practically!

You would get a reasonable HZJ80 in that range. Excellant in all types of terrain. The standard model has the barn doors,5sp and vinyl floor and usually white.
If you look at any,try and find out about the history as some of them were used in the mines.
A lot of them were ex govt but can be found in reasonable shape if they were in private hands after being sold off.
You could also get a turbo diesel 4 dr Patrol in that range
