Hi there,

I have a BJ40 with a B1 diesel engine, the 3.0 litre one. Now I want to buy a new B3 (3.4 litre) engine, and to increase the amount of Hp, put a compressor on it. Is this done before? Who sells these, and are they hard to install? And how many horses will be gained? We drive at very high altitudes here in Chile, therefore a compressor will be superb since the air is really thin.
Then the other question would be about the engine itself. How much would that cost? The Hino B3.

Cheers,

Hi Alex , A compressor is usually described as a turbo charger or supercharger on this forum.
Its a very common method for increasing power on the 3B engine.
We tend to refer to them as Toyota engines but I believe they are built by Hino;)

I found these using the search engine

You can get a factory turbocharged engine, the 13B-T or you can do as I have done and turbocharge the 3B. There is a significant improvement at high elevations that I have noticed once the engine is turbocharged.

Thanks for that, I guess it is between that BT-13 and the B14. I heard that the B14 is also powerful with its 3.7 litre direct-injection. I am just afraid that Turbo´s are not that reliable, but maybe at altitudes it will beat the direct injection? And will the gearbox handle such power increase? Is the Diesel gearbox then similar to the 2F?

Curious.

If you have a "B" series engine the 13B-T will mate with the tranny you now have. If you have a 2F the tranny input shaft is different but the tranny is the same.

There is NOTHING unreliable about a turbo. The problems attributed to the turbo are generally "operator error"! At altitude a turbo is FAR superior to a naturally aspirated diesel. You will NEVER go back to naturally aspirated diesels!

Get a pyrometer and a boost gauge and watch them to protect the engine. Maximum EGT's are 1250 pre-turbo or 1100 post turbo. Boost should not be more than about 8-10 for engine longevity. These are MAXIMUM values NOT standard every day values.

Hello Van,

welcome to the board. There are a few other Chilean members on here.

A 3B engine in Canada runs between 3-5 thousand canadian dollars. All dependant on shape.

An imported from Japan 13B-t is well over 5 thousand. Closer to 7 I think. Check out this page for some ideas. http://www.gscruiserparts.com/index.html

Do you know of any importers of engines in Chile? There is a guy on here from Japan who exports engines. His name on here is Japan4x4. You could try him to see if he exports to South America.

Thanks

Thanks for all the info you guys have given me. It is now clear that I want that 13BT engine, and that it is reliable.
