Purchased a complete front axle off of a 85 fj60. I want the 3rd member out of it. I am down to pulling the axle shafts and I cannot get the long side to come out. Short side pulled right out no problem. Any suggestions? Thanks for all replys. John

Obvious question: did you line up the "flats" on the Birfield joint at 12 and 6 o'clock to clear the knuckle bearings?

Otherwise, this can sometimes indicate a bent housing. Slide hammer time!

Slide hammer time is right. I am trying to figure out how to attach the thing as we speak. Thanks for the help. JC

That's a problem I have never had, I don't know why it wouldn't come out. Ditto on the aligning the flat spots of the birf. Other than that, I have had them get stubborn, but I always got them out with a good grip and some wiggling. Wrap a rag around the birf so you can get a better grip. I have seen rear shafts pulled using a chain by doubling the chain, twisting it together then creating a whip effect. This will usually overcome the resistence of a pressed bearing, like on a Ford 9" or a Toyota truck. If you can find a way to keep a chain on that birf, it would probably do the trick.
