So I'm tearing my axle apart to get ready for a cut and turn and the SOA. Having a little trouble on the tear down. Anyone have any idea on how to get really, really stuck cone washers out? Tried a brass drift and a hammer on the end of the studs but none of them popped out. Thanks Guys

Just keep on smackin' the lockout hub assembly and it'll eventually start to work its way loose, bringing the cone washers with it.

If you're not on a time crunch, take a couple days to soak them with some Kroil.

in the immortal words of Marcellus Wallace, "...call a couple of hard pipe-hittin homies to go to work on it with a pair of pliers and a blowtorch..."
(sorry, Pulp Fiction was on this afternoon in my shop) but all the good stuff was deleted

Awesome Walt. I'm gonna go home and watch that tonight.

If all else fails, you can always remove the stud with the double-nut method. The cone washer always comes out when you do that.

ive always just stuck a screwdriver into them and turned it. the pop right out. i guess im just lucky to have never had a problem with them like most people

As long as you're using brass, you can smack the piss outta the studs after you bathed them in your fave rust buster. A small flat screwdriver in the slit and twisted will open them up and loosen their grip.

I'm with the others here. If none of them have come out, you need to smack them harder. I've seen stubborn ones, but not all of them. As always, JMHO.

I use an ice pick to hammer them into the little cut and they usually bite onto the ice pick and pop out from the expansion. that or I grind a screw driver until its skinny to sorta pry into the same slit

In my experience just hitting the stud harder doesn't help on the really stuck ones.
If you hit them hard enough they end up mushroomed over!
Try the double nut trick, it can work quite well, but usually the stud just snaps off like a carrot, so be careful.
Hit the edge of the hub itself, that can pop them off, but is a bit ugly and will leave a dent on the hub.
If its the rear ones, I've found that if you put some bolts in the holes for pulling the axle out and tension them up a little, it can help them come out when you hit the studs.

Thanks guys, will do some work on them this weekend and let you all know the outcome.
