After I had the sense to clean away the grease I found that my shattered birfield had chewed up the longer front axle shaft.

I got a used axle shaft and 2 new birfields from Cruiser Outfitters.

I had to use a lot more force than I thought to get the axle shaft into the birfield. A lead mallet helped as did slamming the assembly down hard onto a board.
The birfield is now about 0.1 inches = 2.5mm from the spring clip. Do I keep going?

Thanks Beno!
Hopefully the junk will work out for me.
