I'm in the middle of doing my first ever axle rebuild on my 90 FJ62. I've pulled my right axle and observed that I have the common groove worn where the inner seal touches. I dragged my thumb nail on the wear and I can barely feel a groove. Its more like a smooth spot. Not very scientific.

My question is, is there a measurement, that I can take with calipers, that will confirm that its within tolerances and will maintain proper contact with the inner seal. I am replacing the inner seal with the rebuild with a kit from Cruiser Outfitters.

While I'm on the subject, what should I be looking for to tell if the axle needs to be replaced. Its a expensive item to replace but if I'm going to replace it, this would be the time to do it.

This Noob would appreciate any input. Thanks

If you use the Heavy Duty Marlin seals, they'll be in a slightly different spot and double lip, so you'll be fine.

Did it leak before you took it apart?

Here is a pic of my passenger side knuckle.

Hi, I’ve had no problems with the Toyota inner seal even when the axle had a little wear. Just be patient . Mike
