So...I’m having one of those weekends.

I had noticed a little while back my drivers side wheel had some play in it. I ordered up everything to repack the wheel bearings. Got the cover off and...

Lots of play between the hub and axle. The axle looks aftermarket. Looks like I am on my way to a new axle and hub 😢.

The nuts were hand tight, and the star washer was barely bent. The inner washer has a nice grove in it. Both bearings feel pretty loose, and the outer locked up in the parts washer.

Finally, based on the rust, it looks like the needle bearings may have never been greased. The axle moves pretty freely around in the hub. Do I need to plan on replacing needle bearings, too? I haven’t looked at what kind of job that is...

I am going to say you need a complete rebuild, bearing replacement, seals, etc.... Consider new flanges as well.

Oh MY...........!

Sorry to say, but in addition to bearings and races/seals.....you're probably looking at new CV axles, Flanges, needle bearings, solid bushings and spindle seals.

Needle bearings: 90364-33011
Solid Brass Bushing: 90381-35001
Spindle Seal: 90316-72001

Yup that work is pretty questionable so I would just plan to do a full overhaul and get it done with. Don't skimp just get the good stuff and replace everything in there for piece of mind. I mean that barely looks like it was greased at all and if it was, it was done with red clay, not grease!

Other side looks the same...😢

Well....at least they were consistent. Sorry to see that.

Build it back 'right' and then enjoy it for many years.

This is what spindle needle bearings that have likely never been greased look like.

What was in the shaft was hard. Amazingly they still spun pretty freely.

I've received all of my new parts, and rebuilt the OEM axle tonight. I put my new hub flanges on the new outers to see how tight they fit - slipped on easily and had no play. Then I tried them on my old axles...slipped on easily and no play. Not what I was expecting. Those teeth looked pretty worn to me. Don't get me wrong, I like the idea of putting new axles on, but it appears I could have been a little more patient and gotten away with keeping my old ones. Oh well, they'll look so much nicer, until I hit a good mud puddle.
