Hi guys, I have a 88 HZJ from Australia and was wondering can I trace the history / previous owners of the car via its plate ? THS-088 (NSW)....

The PO brought it from a Camper Dealer north of Sydney...

From what I know,the authorities are fairly reluctant to give out anything about the previous owners.
I base that upon my own state of WA but I havent heard of anyone,anywhere else being given that kind of info.
They may tell you where and when it was sold new,reported accidents,finance owing.

I dont know what kind of info you get for your $18,maybe things have changed.

The reason I am asking is because I have an HJ45 pickup (all original / un-restored) from that region that is the most rust free Cruiser I have ever owned. I do not know if the vehicle was sheltered by the prvious owner but it has a near perfect frame and body. Thanks....................1978HJ45

Coastal regions are fairly wet in winter and humid in summer esp northern NSW but inland can be dry except for seasonal flooding.
The arid parts are central Australia where rainfall occurs on average every 4 years or so

I dont think moisture is a problem if there is a dry spell afterwards to dry things out
The PO may have been a careful owner who kept the gutters and drainholes clean.
I also think leaving the windows down an inch stops humidity building up which condenses and forms water droplets inside the roof.
 
I doubt you will get any decent info from government sources, due to privacy laws.

If you knew the name of the camper company, you could contact them, and they would probably have detailed service records and information about where they bought it from.

NSW is approx. 1000kms x 1000kms, a fairly large state, with coast along the Eastern edge, farmland in the middle, and arid/desert inland.

So depending on where it was located in NSW, it could be from semi-tropical coastal areas with high humidity and salt, or very dry inland areas.
 
It is amazing the number of ads. you see for Land Cruisers that mention how great the vehicle is and then follows up the description by saying " rust in the usual places." So I guess I am truly luckly to have a 32 year old Cruiser that does not have rust issues. The previous owner or owners deserve a lot of credit for taking care of the truck.

We also don't have the issue of salt on the roads to deal with ice in winter, which seems common in some North American states.

the salt on the roads what exacly does that do?
 
Salt draws out the moisture, ie: water, and breaks up the ice crystals.
Makes it safer to drive on apparently. I drove on some salted roads at a town just near the entrance to Yellowstone National Park.
 
In laymen terms adding salt lowers the temp. at which water will freeze therefore making the roads safer ( at least in theory).
I am in a southern state and if there is salt on the road it was probably the result of a wreck involving a truck carrying salt. Salting roads is more of a northern state issue.

Indeed nothing like salt and gravel on your chips....:)

My troopie is from 88 and over the years its lost voids of paint around the leading edges, its gone from white to primer to nothing.. so rust protection is a priority here .... very little rust to deal with mainly from the leaking windscreen, rotted out the passenger floor.

But first I need to remove all the bloody sand and red mud ....

Do you happen to have the original manual? sometimes they have the original owners name in it. Also have a look for a dealer. If in the rear window there is a sticker, give them a ring and ask them to get the original owner to call you...

In some countries it's even worse....
Don't know or they still do it now but I remember driving an unpaved road in Norway in the summertime, some years ago.
This road was covered with salt, as if in wintertime....tho no snow.....
When I asked around I got the answer this was because salt attracts moist and this way the unpaved road was less dusty....;)

this is still the case. the salt attracts mositure in the air and helps bind the dry road surface. i worked in a mine in Norway up beside the russian border. we didnt have a water cart, so used the salt spreaders instead. some dipsht put ammonia nitrate prill in the back of one truck instead of salt. surprisingly it lasted longer as a dust suppressant than the salt, though at a larger cost.

Some coal mines use salt to bind the roadways.

i worked in an underground salt mine once. all the steel on gear that stayed underground had very little or no corrosion. but the landrovers that we used to drive in and out of the mine!! the portal came out just behind a beach and they were exposed to the sea moisture. the aluminum bodies looked perfect but the chaisis and steel bulkheads were serverely corroded.

here in the british isles there aint many pre 90s cars on the road due to salt on roads and salt air from the atlantic.

my imported australian HJ75 flared up with rusty acne which it never had in Oz.

Do a little research eg camper dealer details,post them up and lets see what can be found out.You never know someone might know someone who knows someone else.
 
Thanks guys, so the troopie has been in Europe for 9 months and is rusting everywhere, really every stone chip and there are many, have started to rust... its through on the arches...... the PO fitted rubber arch covers.. BAD IDEA

I have no other paperwork, this is all the PO can tell me....


"I bought the truck from a used camper dealership just outside north of Sydney. they did not have any history or paperwork from Trekka. they did not really know much about it, they mostly just sold larger trailer camper and got this one as a trade-in i believe."
