I have a 1971 fj40 and I am wanting to upgrade to disc brakes. Autozone has disc brake components (rotor, caliper, pads) for later year fj40's (78-82). I was thinking of purchasing these items at autozone and sourcing knuckles to complete this setup. Would this be ideal or should I locate a complete axle with all the components?

A complete axle will have knuckles, but likely the other parts will need to be replaced anyway, while you're doing all the ugly, dirty work. Any chance I could talk you into quality Toyota parts instead of cheapo AutoZone parts?

Won't a complete knuckle assembly of a 60 work?

"Cheapo" sucks. I just hated it when the Autozone alternator on one of my vehicles died after only 180,000+ miles and they handed me a fresh one under warranty. Really twists me off when the electronics and emissions stuff, even hard parts, comes in name brand boxes. But I've learned to live with it.

I too would avoid the autozone stuff. Get a 60 series knuckle and see what you need to replace. OEM pads are good and not expensive. If you want to save some money, there are some GOOD aftermarket brands to consider. I got Brembo rotors for significantly less than OEM. Rebuilt calipers (on OEM core) can save money if you go with one of the top notch rebuilders (Nugeon is one.) Brakes is not an area where you want to skimp on quality.

I would deal with the axles first before buying parts. There are many different options to get to disc brakes, once you get the knuckles then you will know what parts you need and autozone will still have them. You might even find a complete fj40 disc axle for sale.

I got my calipers for the 1978 fj40 axles I picked up from autozone. I put new autozone calipers on my sons truck, after two years they were not working well because my son abused them mudding all the time and autozone replaced them no questions asked, it was much more abuse then a quaility issue.
