1973 FJ40
New stock radiator
Electric fan
302 V8
C4 3 speed auto with trans cooler mounted above rear axle
Orion T-case
488s
35" mud terrains
About 3,000 rpm at 60 mph
Around town the engine runs at normal temp (about 2/3 on stock gauge) and transmission runs under 210. All is good.
When heading up grades going to the mountains the engine heats up to about 3/4 on the stock gauge and the transmission heats up to 230-240 and pumps fluid out the vent (may have been over filled). This was on a cool day with outside temperature around 60.
I need to find a way to keep them cooler and am considering a new aluminum radiator with built in trans cooler from Advance Adapters. Has anyone had any good or bad luck with this approach?
Any other helpful hints would be appeciated.
