Hey all I need some help with my automatic transmition. On the way to work this morning after about 4km of driving at around 60kph a whine that sounded like alternater whine started, 300 meters on the tranny starts jumping in and out of gear. I pulled over to have a look, check fluid level etc, everything looked fine so thought i would keep going, put it in drive and away we go fine as can be, until 2km up the road the same thing. I changed the ATF this evening and took it for a drive and yes same thing again.

Some of your guys wisdom and 60 series knowledge would be great thanks.

Richard,
The 3FE list has covered this many times on things to try. The first thing to check would be the filter screen, as it sounds like limited flow is causing slippage. You want to drain the tranny again, drop the pan and clean the filter screen. Take note to look at the particles in the screen for metal chunks or such which would indicate a time for a rebuild. Sludge and fine particles are normal wear but can clog the screen. Then passively flush the rest of the fluid out by taking off a return line from the transimission cooler and starting the engine. You can let the transmission sump run dry, don't worry. Then refill with syn tranny fluid. Make sure fluid level is correct.

Other things to check are the kick down cables for stickage if you are having problems with shifting. The party trick should be used as a last resort.

Mark

Richard,

Mark made some great suggestions.

Your transmission is and A440F... you will find a lot of stuff using A440F for a search.

I have a feeling your transmission is just a little low on fluid. Make sure you check it with the truck on level ground after a good lenght drive. If it is a little low it will shift like you are saying.

Also Add a fluid cooler and a temp guage
