here in Panamá 90% go with this rule .. never engage 4H.

LOL. Most of the cruisers, patrols,Prado's, Jackeroos etc etc never leave the bitumen. Makes one wonder where these these statements have their base.A lot of the wagons are bought purely as a status symbol. Many people will not spend $55,000 +++ to $100,000 then take it into the bush to knock it around.

There are plenty of people here that buy full size trucks for that much or more and use the hell out of them. I could see less people not bangin up a new 105 but a new 79 trayback. I don't really buy it.

Yeah, look at all the guys in McMurray with too much cash and their new $60 k trucks. They still manage to beat the piss out of them. Never mind all the oilfield or seismic trucks... These see a pretty hard life.

And the sheep thing? I lived in the maritimes for a year and all I can say is that we were just helping them over the fence. LOL

Well I guess you are right all the time you spend here. LOL. My nephew just left Denver where he was working in the IT industry being paid around US $60.00 an hour, guess on that money you can afford to bang up anything you buy.Of course trucks on mine sites and cattle properties get a hard life, what would you expect. But the average bloke that pays over $50.000 for a new ute [ no extras] is going to look after it as that is well over a years wages for the majority of Australians.:D

I'm not talking about the average yuppie :flipoff2:
I'm talking about the average contracter, painter, landscaper, tile guy, framer, etc.

I have a few friends that make an average living doing something of the above and they put 30-40k a year driving to job sites, hauling crap, etc.

When my friend asked if I wanted his old cummins with 260K, I said no way it was a pos except for the motor.

Thanks for the salute.:D I consider myself pretty average and being a carpenter have used my ute constantly for 9 to10 years now with out it becoming a POS. Both for hauling tools and building gear and 4wd. The truck has even been to Moa Island in the Torres Straight for over a year.LOL. Not many been there. My neighbors Nissan Patrol Diesel ute is used to drive to his shop and the odd visit to a neighboring town a couple of times a year to see family. The thing with Australia, especially Queensland is as soon as a vehicle looks sus the Police or the Transport authority that do road checks will pull you up and defect your vehicle. Random checks happen all the time. When you get a defect you are required to present your vehicle for an inspection at the pits then the trouble starts.Full inspection for defects, oil leaks and worn parts. And do these blokes enjoy their work LOL believe me they do.But it keeps the crap off the road, good thing.cheers all in fun.LOL.:D

Another good reason is that there is a healthy, strong market for second hand vehicles and parts over here in Oz. Why would you go to the effort of drumming up a new market where you have to go to all the effort of exporting when you can make the sales locally and still make a quid.

Also don't forget the harsh penalties that Japan imposes on older vehicles that makes it unecenomic to own one. This creates a large surplus of cheap second hand vehicles just ripe for the export market. In Oz here, second hand cruisers are still worth a fortune.

also this makes for a strong Jpanese import market down under...
you boys are one of our stronger competitions...
cheers

hell, i see pOS trades trucks here all the time, beat to snot, barely maintained enough to stay on the road... i sure wouldn't talk about decent units here in Canada...
congrates on being able to have the patience to keep your ute in top shape...
cheers

I hear what your saying but I suspect it's not the norm is all I'm saying. Hey I've been wrong plenty of times before. I have one contractor friend that keeps his trucks as nice as could be. It's still a work truck and probably well taken care of like yours.

Now my other contractor friend is another story. His trucks stay nice for a few years but dispite is best efforts his work truck is used and used hard. Turpintine spills, guys lean against the truck dent it scratch it, Trash etc gets tossed in.etc. etc. after 5-10 years it looks like a work truck and has a ton of miles to boot. He even bought a trailer to haul his stuff around so the truck will last/stay clean longer. He keeps it running very well that's why they motor was in great shape. I seem to see more of these than I do an nice taken care of truck and who knows how well the maintence is.

I'm sure there are a few clean trucks there as well as quite a few that's seen better days. Why would someone part out a perfectly running 300k cruiser ;)

ADM Cruisers truly are poorly maintained. Just have a look at this old hammered troopy.

They have neglected this one so badly, that it has never been repainted from new!;)

Thanks for the kind words folks. It is generally in really great shape, but it does have a few "bush mechanic" fixes that are scary. The worst of which is on the oil pan. Instead of undoing the bolts and pulling the oil pan, somebody, down under, cut a large access hole with an angle grinder, and when finished welded the hole back up! I have heard that welding is also a popular fix for leaky joints in your tranny, transfer case!

Regards,
Scoot

The sump may have hit a rock or something, where is the patch? Welding it on the engine sounds like a good way to start a fire in the engine to me. Try putting that out with out a rebuild afterwards . I am sure you are pulling our leg about the transfer case welding.LOL.

bigbrowndog,
I am sure there is a business for you in selling parts and trucks to NA if you wanted it. Guys are always wanting certain troopies and parts that cannot be found in NA or JApan.

Buy a container, load it up, Send it to me :), I will send you back payment in old chev 6.2 diesels :) .....

No seriously there is a business there for ya. I have seen a auto trader magazine from western OZ, I was blown away by the decent pre 1990's rigs in there. And the prices were not to far off.

A 45' container ships for about 6000 cad from OZ to Vancouver. Takes about 5 weeks to deliver. It will hold about 90,000lbs of stuff. You will volume out before being gross weight out.

Think about it.....!
