at what point would you consider re-gearing a 74?

Jim

sounds right to me, so i was thinkin of a 4:56 ratio. but what i will do is drive the 33" tires before i spend $$$'s.

;)

Most aussie landcruisers,if they no longer have their stock rims and tyres, will be running 31,32, 33in or the metric equivalent.
All our 60 and 70 series from 84-98 run 4.11 .

I asked a similar question to the OP in this thread as well.

Here in the US the auto FJ62 got 4.11 gears while the 60's have 3.7. 4-runners also had a similar gear difference between the auto and manual versions with the auto being lower.

Not sure exactly why they did it. Would you not apply this same logic to the rigs we build? If 4.1 and 33s work with a manual truck - according to toyotas application of gearing in NA wouldnt 4.56 make sense?

Ive driven an auto FJ62 (4.1) with 33" tires and it does seem like lower gearing would be better.

interesting

my reasoning, is on an auto the lower gearing [particularly in hilly country] makes sense it's just a case of how low... 33" tires and 4:11 is borderline for a 74 auto, imo.

I have no experience with the 13B-T with an auto. My BJ70 has 33s, 4.56s and a 5 speed. It works very well, just slightly lower than stock (3.70s) with stock tires (28-29"). My 74 has 31s, 5 speed and 4.11s. It's actually a bit low, and would be better (for the road) with a 32 or 33" tire. I know greg_b runs 35s and 4.11s, but with a Marks under/under t-case gears, so it's probably close to an effective 4.56 in the pumpkins...
Friend used to have an HJ60 with an auto, he ran 265/75R16s with 4.56s. It worked great, especially after he turbo'd it...well, till it blew up ;-)
I'd guess you'd be happy with 4.56s and 33s - worst case scenario is it's a bit low and you're forced to compensate with bigger tires - win/win situation! The gears aren't going to add a lot to your bill if you're doing ARBs in both ends anyway.
Best to try a set first though. If you come to vancouver you can throw my 255/85R16s on for a test drive. There's no shortage of mountain roads 10 minutes away to see how it does in the hills.

I think the 4.11 with 33's is a great combination. Regearing alone will only sacrfice economical highway speeds (revs too high) - I think the real issue here is the low range(1.99) is not low enough.

If the 74 had a 4:1 low range the truck would be ideal (crawl ratio 80:1 for the 5-speed) and still the truck would be able to cruise at descent highways speeds.

what ratio do older 60 series run ? I thought they were 4:11 too ? Just cause i've bought a early 60 rear end to go under my middy. The 60 rear end uses a different tailshaft flange to my middy and I thought that was the only difference ?

P.S I run 33'' on mine with a 5 speed and its great. Going to 35''s soon, just have to use low 1st alot more!

2 BJ74s one Auto and the other 5 s I run both yoko m/t with the 4:11 if the dollars were there maybe 4:56 but you will be fine with stock gearing 33" 10 50 on the 5 s and 33" 12 50 on the auto with 16x 8 4x4 engineering rims I agree with Glenn the low range sucks time for 4.1 low range reduction

Hey Arron - check out the Marlin Crawler at 4.7:1, as compared to the 1.99 t-case in the 74 . They are additive. This would drop the existing crawl ratio by 4.7 times - for the 5 speed from about 188:1 - in low-low -1st gear
