at what point would you consider re-gearing a 74?

my 74 is an auto with 4:10s

when i have arb lockers installed i will be considering the option of re-gearing the ring and pinions.

tire size will be 33".

opinions please.

:wrench:

With 33s it would be still close to stock as the 16x7.50 tyres are only fractionally smaller . If you still do road trips leave it at 33s and 4.11.
Read Kevinmrowland's reasons why he went back to 4,11 and his 33s.

Simon, I have 33's on both the '55 and the '60. The '60 has 4:11's and a 5 speed the '55 has 3:70's and a 4 speed. If you're going to make highway trips I'd stick with the 4:11's otherwise you'll be reving high when you're on the highway.

Thanks Rosco. I've seen that FAQ but didn't know which tranny code(s) is was for the BJ74 auto tranny. Also do you know the equivalent tire diameter of a 7.5-16 tire?

The transmission is a A440f ,all the same ratios AFAIK.All that info re gearbox and diff is on the firewall plate

My Sava 7.50 x 16 are 770mm fitted with the weight on them and 50 psi . The metric equivalent ,235/85 are the same .
I believe you can get an equivalent of 34in a 7.50 type tyre. I ve seen pics of them fitted to split rims and they had an aggressive tread.
My local tyre fitter couldnt find them in his books but says they are out there.

I found with the 7.50 x16 ,when my speedo reads 120kph ,the GPS says 117kph.
The difference gets smaller the slower I go

If Im not mistaken, didnt Kevin switch to 3.70 - then put the 4.11 back in because it had better driveability around town?

True ,but he did find the 4 .11the best all round:D

I think once you go into big tyres, big lift and start moving axles forward combined with low ratio diffs ,it takes the polish of their everyday drive status, but thats my opinion;).

If you want to drive a little ways north, you could try mine - 10.50 x 33 BFG A/T's

Simon:

My 1Hz with the auto and the 33's, and 4:11 gearing (I believe) gives me almost exactly 2000 rpm at 100 km/h, locked up in fourth.. I'm not sure which engine has more torque at 2K rpm, but IMO the 33's are the limit for acceptable highway performance in the hills, with the 1HZ..

The BJ60 with stock tires and the stock 3.70 gearing is almost identical to 33" tires and 4.11 gearing.
