Are Trac and A-trac same thing?

I have a 2007 lx470. I have read and seen videos about the A-trac system. Is that what is being activated when I get a light coming on that says "trac"? Or is this a new an different version of A-trac?

Trac keeps you from burning out and launching yourself into a ditch. If you do find your self in a ditch, a-Trac is the system that will get you out of the ditch.

That's what I thought. Question is "is there a third measure called 'a-trac' that has nothing to do with 'trac', and if so, what would light up on my dash if it were activated?"

Trac is to get you off the line quicker, safer, and little wheel spin.
A-Trac (active traction) gets you up and over off road obstacles.

Both systems use the brakes (ABS module) to prevent wheel spin. A-Trac is the off road version of Trac.

I believe in all 4wd's (at least the LC/LX) atrac is how Toyota coins the term for 4wd vehicles and trac is how they coin the term for 2wd vehicles. So effectively in our 100 series trac = atrac.

Related question......
My VSC/TRAC light has been come on a few times this year (I think the Yaw sensor is going bad). When the light comes on will the ATRAC still function normally? I've been thinking all along that it would not but haven't been able to test it.

I had an 04 Sienna AWD and its VSC and TRAC were quite annoying in operation compared to the LC/LX. The VSC system was what I considered invasive - it started beeping and controlling the van before I wanted it to engage. In the snow and ice, the system worked even at low speeds making the van difficult to steer when turning. I had fits trying to get the Sienna to turn into my driveway in snow/ice at very low speed (est. 3 mph) because the system kept trying to make it go straight! The 100 has an active system that will release control at very low speeds - I never have had the "invasive"problem I described with either of my 100s. So when I see VSC in a Sienna or Highlander AWD; I realize it is very different than VSC and ATRAC in the 100 or in the 4WD 4Runner I had. So when I see ATRAC, I think of a system that allow more driver control in off road and wintry conditions.

Google-in around and did not find much; i came across this thread in the mud search.

I was looking at a 2006 LC but there was no mention in the specs of A-Trac. Do all LC's after 2000 [i think] come already equipped with A-Trac? Is there a VIN code that would state otherwise or is A-Trac a standard feature on ALL LC's/LX's?

Thanks,

Ty! I missed this tidbit...

2000

  • VSC (Vehicle Skid Control) added
  • A-TRAC (Active Traction Control) added
  • EBD (Electronic Brake Force Distribution) added
  • Rear Differential Locker was no longer available as an option
  • Front differential was changed from a 2 pinion to a 4 pinion unit.

Looks like 2006 these systems were upgraded but were still present.

2006
Interior
  • The cruise control system was changed to keep the vehicle’s set speed in its memory even if the vehicle dropped below the low-speed limit.
Exterior
  • The design of the headlights and the grille where changed.
  • The design of the rear combination lights where changed.
  • The rear spoiler was introduced as optional equipment.
  • The taillight and stop light bulbs where changed to LEDs (Light-Emitting Diodes).
Drivetrain
  • 2UZ-FE Engine- The VVT-i (Variable Valve Timing-intelligent), ACIS (Acoustic Control Induction System), and AI (Air Injection) system are added to the 2UZ-FE engine to achieve a greater performance level and reduce exhaust emissions.
  • Active Height Control Suspension (AHC) is introduced as optional equipment.
