Are Tire Carrier Bumper & Hook supposed to be painted?

Were these painted from the factory or left as is? Body color or what color - if painted?

Any raw steel will rust. Paint it or powder coat it.

I believe they were painted argent silver.

Depends on the year. From the factory:

77 - the bumper and hook and bolts are yellow zinc plated

78 - bumper and bolts are yellow zinc, hook and bolt heads are painted the body color

79 and on - bumper painted satin black, bumper bolts are yellow zinc, hook and bolt heads are painted the body color

I was pulling these parts off my 79 today and can confirm what wscbill said. The hook was painted on the body, no paint underneath. The bumper was attached later as there is paint under it and it is black.

You sure the bolts were clear zinc and not yellow zinc?

All bumpers, bolts, and hooks I've seen have been yellow zinc. The bumper still offered by Toyota (shown above) is yellow zinc. It's the modern ROHS compliant yellow zinc that's not as yellow as the old stuff.

Mine are clear not yellow. Maybe faded but I can take a pic.

Wow- how timely- I just today took these two items off my '77 40, prepped and painted them the matching blue body color. Will the Gods of OEM correctness frown? LOL!
