Hi all new friends im a newb here first time posting long time reader. Iv just installed arb airlocker in front diff and 4.65 nitro gears. Lockers turned out perfect and i thought gears were good too but once i installed it all i took it for a test drive and its making a winning noise at about 70 to 90 kph . Eceleration and deceleration . Pinion preload was about 16 foot pounds the pinion shim i used was the same one that come out with the factory gears and backlash was about 15 thou. . The carrier bearing preload was just done by turning the side rings 2 clicks into each other. Can anyone shed some info on anything you might think i done wrong . Would be a big help. Here is a pic of the final gear patten i achieved just before installation

I would have moved the pattern a little more to the heel (inside) on the power side of the tooth. You are very much centered.
It also looks like you're a bit shallow on your tooth contact (a bit too far out on the tip).

Take a look at the units posted by Zuk and the tooth patterns he follows on these units.

Update on the gears. The front turned out to actually be good. After all that it was the back winning and not the front as i disconnected the tailshaft at rear and made it like a front wheel drive and the wine was gone. Then i disconnected the front shaft and put the rear back on and made it rear wheel drive and the wine was back again . Its amazing how the sound travels thinking all this time it was the front. Anyway i have pulled out the 3rd member to inspect it and here is the outcome . Back lash was between 6 and 9 thou and the pattern looks like this ......... any idea why would it wine ? And i cant seem to tell . Can anyone recommend if this patern looks too deep or too shallow . Thanks for a shed or any light on this

I've done a bunch of R&P installs but I don't pretend to be an expert at the same time. That patterns location looks ok but I don't know why it's shaped like that.

You won't get a reliable or distinct contact mark unless you 'load' the gear-set. It is the #1 thing folks fail to do.

It should take 40-50 ft. lbs to turn the pinion in order to load the gears. You can wedge a piece of wood between the ring gear and the housing to provide resistance.

Typically, you'll see folks slathering on more marking compound in order to get some kind of mark they can see when what they need to do is load the gear set.

Ok apdate on the diff. Iv had enough of trying multiple times diffrent pinion shims so iv took it to a diff specialist so he could rebuild it and it turns out that the crown and pinion are not cut properly and no matter what he does he cant get rid of the wine . Aftermarket bad quality gear sets

Makes perfect sense. I believe they are steering you right on this.
